I am wondering if it would be a good investment to by the haynes repair guide for my truck since I am very novice at repairs. So far I have gotten my instructions from this site but sometimes a picture is worth a billion words.

the haynes book is very good. It does have pictures, but not for everything.

I'm not sure of the contents, but several people here use alldata.com (and I know my local midas shop does as well). also others have purchased the tech manual from the factory. maybe others can comment on these two options.

We all need to start somewhere.

I would buy the factory service manual, either printed or on CD. You can not beat the information that is available in the factory book. The DC manual covers everything in better detail, from top to bottom. As an example before I found this site a few years ago, my vehicle speed sensor went bad. I looked up the wiring diagrams and looked for everything that wasn't working and they all had the VSS in common, it was a guess, still I replaced it for $ 22.00 and was back in business. What I saved in labor on that one repair covered the expense of the DC manual.
As you may see I am very biased on what manual to buy, NOTHING comes close.

I have to agree. The DC manual is worth having for the theory of operation on the ignition/efi system alone. There is a wealth of information in that manual. Well worth the $100something you will pay on eBay or elsewhere.

Torque, specs, wireing, Theory of Operation. The only thing the DC manual is light on is exploded views and **detailed** disassembly instructions. I assume, that that is somewhere else in another book you have to buy, probably a parts manual. For another $100.00.

I have both books. I always revert to the big orange one.

The Haynes manual is nice for torque specs and routine maintenance, but, for example, the ball joint section of the Haynes manual for a 2002 Dakota tells you to buy the control arm assembly - that the ball joints can't be replaced. I used a cold chisel, a big hammer and a ball joint press and proved them wrong...lol Sounds like the factory manual may be the way to go.
