I know this is a common topic on this site but...
I have another question...
I filled my tranny and it took less that 2L of oil when the spec says it should take 2.2L.
I had the transmision was in 1st gear while draining and filling.
Does anyone know if the gear you leave the tranny in while filling it would affect the amount of oil it will recieve?
Should I have left it in neutral?

NV3500 Approximate dry fill or fill to bottom edge of the fill plug hole.

4X2 - 2.28 L (4.8 pts.)
4X4 - 1.98 L (4.2 pts.)

Gear selection makes little or no difference when filling.

hello all,

if you remove the driveshaft while
draining the tranny, a bit more lube comes
out the back.
takes just over 2 liters total in mine.

FYI, I live in the Montreal region
and use a mixture of Redline Oil:
1/3 MT-90 (75W90) & 2/3 MTL (70W80)

a little stiff for the first shift in
below freezing weather but fine soon after.
Nice and quiet too, unlike before....
....this is my second tranny on a 2004 truck,
first one replaced under warranty at 10K miles,
was running the recommended NV3500 lube,
internals completely ruined, constant gear whine
and metal particles in oil since 5K miles,
even with easy driving & no towing.

Brand new replacement trans. came from the factory with synthetic 75W gear oil
( NV4500 lube ), and not the recommended lube like the owner's manual says.
Maybe New Venture or Dodge figured out the factory fill was too thin..?

just draining the transmission does not empty all of the fluid out - there is still some in the torque converter. Every other fluid exchange I opt to take my truck in to have them flush it out, this pulls all fluid out of the system including the torque converter. Some places actually back flush it which is supposed to clean the filter so you don't have to replace it every time.

Hey Dan M

DESCRIPTION
The NV3500 is a medium-duty, 5-speed, constant mesh, fully synchronized manual transmission. The transmission gear case consists of two aluminum housings. The clutch housing is not a removable component. It is an integral part of the transmission front housing.

I have the nv-3500 and I looked all over the place and I can't find the plug for the torque converter.

If it's anything like the 42RE, there is no plug...you have to disconnect one of the lines and start the engine. When the engines running, it'll pour the fluid out of the line into whatever container you're using to catch it. While doing that, you also have to be filling it back up with fresh fluid. Usually the fluid comes out faster than it goes in so you have to be constantly starting and stopping the engine...which is why it's recommended to have a buddy or two helping.

DRAIN AND FILL PLUG LOCATIONS
The NV3500 fill and drain plugs are both located in the front housing. The fill plug is at the passenger side of the housing. The drain plug is at the bottom of the housing.

The NV3500 is a manual 5-speed transmission and therefore is nothing like 42RE.

Amsoil Amzoil Ams Oil - Lucas Oil Stabalizer
IP: Logged

Message:

99 Dakota,

Lucas Oil Stabalizer?

I would NOT recommend Lucas Stabalizer in a motor oil.

Lucas Oil Stabalizer ... in all their demonstration machines ... show how the oil will climb in that little gearwheel contraption. Kinda neat, EXCEPT ... motors have an oil pump so why do you need an additive in a motor oil to help it climb? The oil has more than sufficient ability to get onto and into all parts of an engine. Second, you want the oil to flow ... and by increaseing the tackiness or stickiness to an oil (which is what Lucas promotes), it would reduce flow.

Your Engine needs ... Flow and Filtration.

... Flow and Filtration.

Just in case you are serious about the question "but where is the torque converter?", read the following from www.HowStuffWorks.com.

"If you've read about manual transmissions, you know that an engine is connected to a transmission by way of a clutch. Without this connection, a car would not be able to come to a complete stop without killing the engine. But cars with an automatic transmission have no clutch that disconnects the transmission from the engine. Instead, they use an amazing device called a torque converter. It may not look like much, but there are some very interesting things going on inside."

thats why I put it in my manual transmision because it sticks to gears which I would think would be good for a manual transmision. it also did a good job of getting rid of a nasty lifter tick actualy probly a stuck lifter that colapses when it sits in my gf 95 grand am with a a 3100 v-6 and 170,000 miles

Lucas oil stabilizer will actually cause the NV3500 to not
function as well as by using the synthetic oil alone.

I use the AMSOIL 5w-30 in mine and it shifts so sweet on those
cold mornings.
