Message:
Help I got a check engine light today and I have tried to on off on off on with the ignition key and I cannot get the codes to appear.

Also is there any way to clear this without going to the dealor?

I was going down a steep set of hills in 2nd gear for a bit and the engine
stalled and the light came on...

I have a 1998. Again Ive tried every combination of the on off on off on to get the code fast slow. Do I need to wait for all the lights to go out before I cycle it on/off each time...
Help!! :(

Don't think it is your problem, but if you have a blown fuse for some crazy reason, you will have to replace it before you can do the on/off system. Of course it will probably blow again, but knowing where it is coming from is half the battle. So check you're fuses.

Good Luck!

To reset the PCM all you have to do is disconect the neg battery cable. then turn the key to the START position for about 20 seconds. then reconnect you battery and your all set

Kinda off topic but the dealer said my wifes car (Cadillac) needs the PCM reset due to a service engine soon light. Do you think the above scenario will work with other manufacturers? Thanks.

I believe I've read that turning the key with the negative battery cable disconnected, clears the PCMs memory tables...some folks get the check engine light back again after a period of time.

Other folks reset the PCM after doing certain mods to get the computer to learn the mods and/or change their driving habits and get the computer to learn these new habits (more agressive or conservative)

Yes,the turning the key to check codes will not work on trucks newer than '97. I have a '92 shadow , and I still check for codes that way on it. I think '96 was the last year for it.

The key on/off does work onm the new ones. When I got my 01 I changed the gas cap to a locking that was the wrong one. I got a check engine light. Found out about the key routine did it and got a code that I looked up at Allpar and found that it was my gas cap. Luckily Stant replaced it with the correct one and no problems since.

Point is the key on/off routine works on the 01 and the code appears in the odometer.

My '00 Sport also works with the on off on off ON.
I don't know if it has anything to do with VIN #'s or certain models but it does work on mine.

Neither worked on my 1998 What are the exact steps you are taking on the 2000 to get the codes? How long do you wait between each on-off sequence?

What's the difference between diconnecting the pos cable and turning the key on then doing it with the neg cable? I did it with the pos cable and it worked.

You don't have to remove any battery cable to reset the PCM. You can just remove the rear PCM connector and leave it of for about 30 seconds. This will clear the codes as well. And the '97-'99 Dak's you can't check the engine codes on with the key on/off combo. '00 and newer you can. You can send the instrument cluster into a self test on the '97 and newer by holding in the odo reset and turning key on, then keep holding the reset until odo reads check. Then release and watch the instrument cluster do it's selftest. It will show codes if the insturment cluster faisl test.

No offense HSKR but NEVER unplug the PCM with the battery hooked up. You run the chance of ruining it. There is a TSB on this. What happens, sometimes, is that the PCM resets the charging voltage goal to 0. After this is done no more charging and only way to correct is replace the PCM. A little expencive especially with a custom program.

Removing the connector only clears the codes...it will not reset the PCM.

Yes, you CAN check the codes with the Key ON/OFF method on '97 models.

WHICH BATT. CABLE TO REMOVE
IP: Logged

Message:
(Webb) simple answer... SAFETY!!

Just like when you jump-start a vehicle, the LAST connction is to the ENGINE of the dead vehicle.

One may do it the "unsafe" way for years without mishap. But when a battery explodes spraying sulpheric acid in your eyes.... you will wish you had heeded those of us that know the possible results when done wrong.

(You do realize that your battery is filled with explosive hydrogen gas, Just like the Hindenburg....RIGHT?)

If you do not know basic underhood safety... please close the hood and step away from the vehicle ;-)

Yes but don't you always want to remove the pos battery terminal before you remove the neg terminal? That way you have no juice running through the vehicle. If you remove the negative battery cable and it bumps anything with a positive charge then you could've just blown a battery and probably your computer, right?

Tried looking them up but the codes are not there. I only get 3 numbers where the codes consist of 5. When I put the codes in they get no matches. Guess I gotta try to get a hold of someone to find out if these are OBDII codes or if these are manufacturer specific codes. Thanks for the suggestion though...

Webb...it's the opposite, you always want to remove the negative terminal first. If you just want to remove the neg, go head and do it. If you have to remove the pos, remove the neg first then remove the pos.

That way, you're taking away the ground, and the voltage running to the battery is pointless.

Chances are, your negative line running from your battery isn't going to touch anything positively charged. If you're that worried, throw a little electrical tape on it real quick.

Once you disconnect the negative terminal, no lines will hold a positive charge. So you're safe.

two things, one, for webb, electricity flows from neg to pos, that's why neg is removed first. the next is my light just came on also, i have a 99 3.9 SLT, i just threw on a cold air intake, the the light be caused by the onboard computer not properly adjusting the air/fuel ratio, HELP I hate seeing that light (I used to own a neon). bad things always happen when that light appears.

using the trip button only does a check of the instrument cluster. Here's what the book says - 950 - the cluster is not receiving message $B0 from the CAB - ! Check the CCDdata bus connections at the CAB - 2 Check the CAB fuse

999 - An error has been discovered -1 Record the failure message - 2 Depress the trip odometer reset button to continue the Self -Diagnostic Test
