Message: I have a 02 Dodge Dakota. Just recently the Check engine light has come on. I took it to Auto Zone, had them do a check on the truck. The error Code was 1769. While I was leaving Auto zone the check engine light went off. The next it came back on. I tried the Neg bat. cable trick that did not work. Any idea why this is coming on or what is making it come on. Thanks for Any info!

Message: joe-- your code, or a 0442 may indicate a "loose" gas cap. i hasd a 0442 code about 8 times since 2000, and turning the cap about 3 complete turns "fixes" it. then clear your code, and you're done. try it, and good luck.

Message: The battery disconnect works.
I purchased a 2002 Dakota V6. The eng service light came on at 65,000 MI. The manual says this is a emission control service check required at given mileage intervals. I've never had other vehicles give this warning & I wasn't about to pay for dealer service for this check. I disconnected the battery and the light went off.

Message: Just so everyone knows about which battery terminal to disconnect first, (since it seems like a few people have no idea what they are doing) you always want to remove the negative one first. The reason is that the negative is connected to the entire car, so everything can be grounded to any metal part of the car. If you attempt to remove the positive terminal with, for examlpe, a completely metal wrench, then you can easily create a short. One end of the wrench is touching the positive side of the battery, and so if you accidently touch another part of the wrench to any other metal part of the car, then that part of the wrench will pretty much be going straight to the negative terminal of the battery. Now there is a direct connection to the positive and negative of the battery. Fun! The wrench will then weld itself to the car because of all the electricity and the battery will soon explode.

Message: "No Bus" generally means a communication problem between an electrical sensor or component and the PCM. Many mistakenly think it means the PCM is bad, but this is not always so. Could be as simple as a bad ground. I haven't heard of this in a '98 before though; only in '00 and up where codes can be displayed in the odometer window with the key on off on off on trick. Maybe someone with a '98 or more experience could be more helpful ?

Message: The P0551 is probably cuasing the other code. Check the pwoer steering pressure sensor. It's probably leaking and forcing fluid down the wiring harness to the O2 sensor connector. Change the pressure and clean the harnesss good.
