I have a 1997 Dakota Sport V6. When light comes on my transmission stays in high gear and won't down shift when I come to a stop. I had this checked they said a sensor was bad in the tansmission, upon further investagation, they found it was clogged with metal shavings from the clutch and bands, thus a rebuilt transmission. This was 4 weeks ago. Just recently we had a cold day and the light came back on, with the same results. Loss of power and shifting problems.
I took it back with the light on, but they said the computer didn't pinpoint any malfuction. Any idea. Could it be the main computer chip is failing when it gets cold ?

I have a 2000 Dakota Sport 4.7 Liter 4DR 4WD Automatic. I use Moble 1 synthetic. I had a problem in the summer of 02. The check engine light would come on and the engine would run warmer than usual (past center) and loss of gas mileage. I went to the dealer and the code came up with "gross vacuum leak". The mechanic couldn't find the problem and charged me $75.00.
The light went out and the truck was back to normal. Two days later the temp started running higher than normal and loss of gas mileage but no check engine light this time. I went back to the dealer and had to leave the truck. He called me and said the thermostat, fuel filter and air filter had to be changed. OK done.($57.00) After a week the same problem with the temp and mileage. Went back to the mechanic and he said the fan clutch needed replacement and tune-up. I skipped the tune-up because I had just put the 100K mile plugs in so only the fan cluch was changed. ($126) A couple of days and the same problem. This time I went to a different mechanic and gave him the history. He looked under the hood and said it might be the radiator or a cracked cylinder head and a fuel pump. I closed the hood and drove off. After about 5 miles the check engine light came on and temp running higher than normal (along with mine)! Went to another dealer to read the code. Same thing, "gross vacuum leak". I told the mechanic the history and he said it was two seperate problems. He couldn't pin point the "gross vacuum leak". He wanted to start replacing electronic parts for the low fuel mileage. (trial and error rather than process of elimination). I said never mind about the vacuum leak. What about the temperature problem? Even though I told him about the history he still insisted on the thermostat and fan clutch. I said never mind. The bill was another $75.00 just to read the code. Now, I'm the kind of person with a lot of patience.....and started to lose it. I didn't put the blame on the truck, but on the Dodge mechanics not knowing the process of elimination to solve a problem! I drove home, parked the truck, went in the house, grabbed a brew, kicked back on the recliner and thought about my day. After consuming most of the twelve pack something dawned on me. The gas cap states that if you fuel the vehicle while it is running, the check engine light may come on. HMMMMMMM
The next day I loosend the gas cap and started the engine. After about 10 minutes the check engine light came on. I turned off the engine and re-tightend the gas cap. Drove to the dealer and asked to have the code read.($65.00) The mechanic said it was a "gross vacuum leak". (this was the same mechanic from the day before.) He asked if I wanted to leave the truck to have it checked out. I said no thanks. I then went to NAPA and bought a replacement gas cap.($5.35) I have NEVER to this date had any other problems! So....you can see how much money was put into this situation. It could have gone on for much more. If you have a problem like mine, I would replace the gas cap first. It's cheaper. It would be interesting to see if anybody out there has the same experience as I did!

Quick Question for someone,
I have the CHECK ENGINE light on, What happened was I pulled the TRANS RELAY fuse and now the check engine light is on, I tried to disconnect the neg batt terminal and hold the key to the start spot and it did not reset it, There is nothing wrong with the truck, It must have gave the on board computer a error, How do I get the check engine light off?

Thank you very much

Ok I got the check engine light off, Just for a FYI, I tried unpluging the Neg termanal from the batt trick and holding the key to the start spot for 20 secs, Didnt work for me, I went to my local autozone store and they gave me a ODBII Scanner to use in there parking lot, It told me the code and let me clear it also, FOR FREE, Only do that if you know you caused the error in the first place like I did and you know for a fact nothing is wrong with the vehicle, If the check engine light comes on without you doing anything consult your local dodge dealer to be safe!
