seems to me all other things other things being equal,(axle ratio, gross weight etc)a 3.9 with 5 speed will acelerate, tow, pull, climb off road everbit as well as a 318 with auto trans.sure the v8 has more tourqe and hp (at the ouput of the engine but any automatic tranmisson even the best of them loose as much as 25 peercent of transmitted power ware as a manual has very little loss.imho the v8 auto will flat out ,out acellerate the v6 manual on a drag strip by the smallest of margines but in all other things they should be about even.what say you engineer types???

You are mistaken. Maybe its the amount of drivetrain loss that's got you confused. Ballpark figures are 25% loss for most autos (if you also want to compare the auto behind the 4.7, figure around 20%), and about 15% for the standard. That gives the standard a 10% edge; but you're giving up about 25% in displacement (and power). So the edge will still go significantly to the v8.

Within 2 weeks, I got a 04 v8/auto QC 4X4 and my buddy got a 04 3.7/stick 4X2CC. They both go good. The 6 impressed me, but the V8 shines anywhere past 40MPH.

Actually, I'll take the auto over the standard for towing any day. Most manufacturers rate the auto higher for towing as a matter of fact. Acceleration and down shifting is much smoother and easier with the auto. Much more practiacal for towing.

NO WAY! I towed my 04 maxum 18ft boat (3100lbs) with probably another 1000lbs of gear up stevens pass in washington (very steep by the way)at 89mph. (4.7 auto cc, AWD)My cousin close to the same setup. Same truck different boat. Also close to 90mph. (Testing out the ol' V8 power) I would love to see video or some proof of somone pulling my boat or somthing eqaul to that with that V6 manual and try to even hit 60mph on that pass. Major B.S. Another buddy of mine who was with us was driving a honda 4 banger granted but he couldnt even keep up with us we had to wait for him at the top of the pass. That V6 just doesnt have the power

My brother towed a 22' Catalina cross-country with the 3.9L V-6 and 4-speed auto 4WD, no problem at highway speed.

Not too swift to tow anything at 90 mph, by the way. No trailers or their tires are rated for that speed, and you can't control it safely.

was'nt the safest thing in the world I will give you that. We were just showing off. Trying to see what they can do. In the original post Scoop said "all other things other things being equal,(axle ratio, gross weight etc)a 3.9 with 5 speed will acelerate, tow, pull, climb off road everbit as well as a 318 with auto trans." The point to my post was, you will NEVER get a stock 3.9 to EVER pull what I pulled, up a pass at 90MPH. Safe or not.
