Subject: Fuel pump problem? IP: Logged
Message: I’ve got a 97 Dakota and the check engine light came on after it started running ragged. My mechanic ran it thru the computer and said it was a fuel injector problem. He cleaned the tips and told me to run cleaner through.
The thing is, that it runs fine when I fill up with gas until I hit 200 miles, then it starts running bad again. This happens every time. Seems more like a fuel pump problem than a fuel injector problem. Any suggestions?

Message: Most likely if the C/E lamp came on due to a fuel pump failure, it should have read either "fuel system lean" or "multi-cylinder misfire".
The symptom you describe is typical of a fuel pump issue. The C/E lamp, as a rule, does not generally come on when a fuel pump fails, but if it does, it should have read one of (or both of) the above list failures.
