Subject: Cheap air dam repair IP: Logged
Message: I bought a 2001 Dakota that had been in a front end collision. The entire front mounting edge of the plastic air dam under the bumper had torn off at the bumper mounting bend. There were also three holes through the front section where the bumper mounting hardware had torn completely through. Wanting to go cheap, I thought I could repair this. Bought a tube of Seamer Mate gutter sealer from Home Depot (gold tube about $4) which I had used previously in the actual intended application and found it to be tough stuff (even flammable, as all the better products are). The aluminum color perfectly matched the grey plastic air dam. Added a few sheet metal supports to support the center section and secured these with pop rivets to the plastic. Used some plastic mesh (fiberglass storm door screening would work) and adhered that to the bumper and air dam with the gutter sealer. When this dried every day, I added another thin layer to fill the gap. Shrinkage is considerable with this product. Used a razor and grinder to get the holes in the plastic somewhat flat. These were filled in with the gutter seal using the same repetitive method. Takes about a half dozen steps. From about 10 feet away the repair is pretty hard to see.
