Subject: buy a used dakota? IP: Logged
Message: Hey all, just found this site. Have a 1994 Jeep
Cherokee that has finally had enough
(ALMOST made it to 300K!!!), and my husband
and I are considering buying a used Dakota,
hopefully a recent-ish one. Reading the other
threads, I have learned a couple things about
the Dakotas, including the ball joint problems,
seat belt recall in '00-'01's, power window and
lock problems, and the potential for losing the
lights. Then there's all the little stuff, and
problems that don't seem to happen to
everyone. SO.... any advice? Get a Dakota,
Don't get one, any particular year
recommendations, or things to watch out for?
Any responses would be MOST appreciated.
Thanx

Message: i just got a new one, i love it for the power and looks, but the reliability has me worried. i think it is hit ot miss, some people have so many miles without any problems, some roll of the lot with tons of issues. since your buying used look for full sevice records and make sure everything was kept up with. then take it to the local mechanic and have all problem areas looked at. overall your safer buying jap, but then again they dont have the room, power or looks. hope it works out for ya

Message: like any make fo vehicle, you can get a lemon no matter what. just inspect it close or take it to a shop you can trust to get it checked out and hope for the best.

Message: I'm still partial to the old style look of the pre 9'7s. My '95 has been very reliable, I love it.. even after a shop told me mine needed a new engine without being able to tell me what's wrong with the one I have... Anyways. I'm still driving it around as usual. Next week I'm spending some time pulling the engine apart and doing some other routine maintenance.
As posted above, some good, some bad. Have a professinal check it out before buying. If you get a late model one, get a warranty if you can. And with any vehicle, proper and prompt maintenance will extend the life of the vehicle. I'm talking more than oil changes and tune ups.
When i get a new truck, I am keeping my dakota.
