Subject: $ to Change Diff & Trans case>synthic? IP: Logged
Message: What should it cost me to have my rear differenctial and transfercase fluid changed to synthic?
4 Wheel Parts in Cobb County Georgia want to charge me $140 plus the cost of the fluids.
Seems high

Message: Do the rear diff yourself, piece of cake. The front is a pita though, just have them do the front and save some cash maybe. Do a search, plenty of info here.

Message: He's right. It's not a technically difficult job. Pop off the diff covers, drain the case, put the cover back, fill the case. Simple. The front is a hassle to get to, though
As for the transfer case, that's even easier. It's like changing fluids in a manual transmission. Get it warm, remove the drain plug, drink a beer, replace the drain plug, remove fill plug, fill, replace the fill plug, drink a beer. Simple! Certainly not worth $140.

Message: Depends on what their labor costs are. I can see the job taking 2 hours, maybe 3. At $50-70/hr for labor, it's not too far out of line.
But I also agree with the previous poster's. The xfer case is easier then changing your engine oil. The rear is not any more difficult, just dirtier and a bit more time. The front is definitely a PITA to get the cover off and back on with the sealant intact.
FYI, I did my tranny, xfer and diffs myself last fall.

Message: I changed the diff fluid using a $20 battery powered pump from kmart.
easier than popping the cover.

Message: A pump won't catch many, if any, of the metal shavings, and you won't be able to see if any parts have broken/self-destructed.
Definitely can be done though.
