Subject: C-4164 Differential Preload Wrench IP: Logged
Message: Hey all,
I am getting ready to install a new set of 4.10 gears in my ride. I need to know if there is a less expensive alternative to buying the C-4164 Differential Preload Wrench. It looks like I could use a threaded rod with the right size hex nut brazed onto the end. Anyone have any experience, maybe know how to make one? Just can't see spending $50 unless it is really necessary.
Thanks alot

Message: Sure is. Use a torsion bar from a 70's full size Chrysler, Dodge or Plymouth. Its a GIANT allen key!

Message: Do you happen to know what size allen it might be? or what the O.D. size of the hex nut should be on the end of the threaded rod?

Message: Just go to a junk yard and get an old torsion bar like Tracktorfix says. It's the right size, it's the right length, and it has a hex on both ends .
An added bonus is that you won't bust it.Just clean it up real good before you stick it in your diff housing. It is also less likely to tear up the axle seals if you rub against it. Dan

Message: I'm sorry it came across that way. It does sound a little prepostorous, but it works. I've used it on countless rearend jobs, and as an added bonus, it makes a good pry bar/streetfight weapon.

Message: I got the torsion bar from a 1975 Dodge just like Tractor Fix said. Got home, had an experienced guy from work take a day off from his second job to help, got the truck jacked up, both axels taken out, drivshaft off, pinion nut off, ready to drop the ring. Go to adjust the adjusters out and WTF!!! the torsion bar hex is too f!@!@!@!** small. WTF! Go to home depot to look for a makeshift fix - nothin. WTF!!! Get home, put everything back together and get online to order a C-4164 Differential preload wrench. Send guy home after 6 hours of accomplishing nothing.
Thanks for the advice.

Message: 1 1/4" if I remember correctly. I rebuilt my whole
rear axle, so with the wheel bearings out, I slid a
1 1/4" socket ( 3/4" drive ) with 2 wheel bearing
nuts in it. BY putting 2 wheel bearing nuts in the
socket ( 1 on top of the other ), they stuck out
just enough to turn it.
It helps you so much if the axle is out of the truck
& you got those wheel bearings out. The $60 part you
talk about is meant to slip in w/o removing the
wheel bearings.
