 Subject: Need Transfer Case for a 88 Dakota

My son is wanting to get a 1988 Dakota that threw a chain and damaged the tranfer case. It has a 5 speed transmission but I'm not sure which motor, V8 I think. I'm trying to figure out which model transfer case I need, 205, 231 or 241. How do I determine exactly what I need and where is the best place to find one? I'm in Northern California.

I'm not sure how to tell which one you want, but you could look for used ones on www.car-parts.com.

it should be a 231,88-96 dak are the same,87 will work,the book says not,
theres a round metal tag that is screwed to the transfers case that will have the info.
