Subject: Mystery sound/vibration solved! IP: Logged
Message: For the first 10 months of ownership (6/03 to 3/04) my 03, 5.9 (this may apply to 4.7s also because the start of the intake is the same), 4X4, QC drove me nuts. Periodically, while going up hills in OD, I would hear this loud vibrating sound. It sounded exactly like I was driving over rumble strips or rough pavement. If I put my hand on the center of the dash I could feel it. I never took it to the dealer because I could go up the same hill 10X at the same speed and it might do it twice or maybe not at all, so I didn't want them ripping my truck apart trying to fix it. I applied all kinds of theories and tweeked all kinds of things to no avail. I got to the point where I accepted the fact that it must be in the tranny. Then in March, I took the air horn off the front of the air box, and plumbed a 4" intake line directly into the fender well opening. The truck has not made a sound since. Apparently, either from engine vibration under load or from trying to suck in a lot of air under load, that air horn must have just started shaking real hard (it does just kind of hang there). I know this is hard to believe, however, its been eight months now without a problem. I just thought I'd pass this on in case any of you have had this problem.

Message: I wonder over the years, just on this board people have been reporting similar symtems and thought it might be joints, rearend and other things.

Message: '00 QC with the same kind of sound as you describe. Only it happens when I am idling in traffic, sometimes. I will check you solution, and see if that is the fix for me. Could you describe the air horn, air box fix a little more in detail, location in the truck?

Message: Sure! It is the convolute pipe or first part of your intake, that plastic horn thing that sucks the air into your air cleaner box. I only removed it to plumb cold air directly from the fender well like most trucks are designed, had no idea it had anything to do with the noise. It just twists and pops out, however, if it is vibrating to much you could also just stabilize it.

Message: sam(you)theman! I checked the air intake horn, and there was so much play between it and the air intake box. Although I have yet to test it, that has to be the source of the vibration. I am going to drill a small hole in the lip of the horn, and anchor it to a bracket on the inner fender with a zip tie. I predict your keen observation will quash that aggravation for good. Thanks!

Message: Although at idle are you sure it isn't just your aux. fan coming on? Good luck either way!
