Message: Do you have any comparison tests with your product against royal purple? I was looking over the website and I don't see anything. I'm looking at switching over to synthectic in my dakota as well as the wife's mustang.
Can you post some test results or send me an email?

I am leaving my office and I will be away from my computer until later today or early tomorrow morning. I will get back with you then. In the interim, I will state that Amsoil reports comparisons vs. what most people use currently in their engines and not vs. speciality oils.

Well, I knew that Amsoil reports comparisons vs. what most people use currently in their engines and not vs. speciality oils, so I was quite certain that Amsoil did not have comparison information, ... so I checked my database and I do not have any head-to-head analysis for Amsoil vs. Royal Purple either.
What I do know ... Royal Purple is a TRUE Synthetic Motor Oil and a good oil, but their 5w-30 tends to thin out very quickly. If you decide to go with Royal Purple ... Go with RP 10w-30, it will have less of a tendancy to thin out.
Also, unlike Amsoil ... Royal Purple is NOT designed for extended drains, and their oil is more expensive than Amsoil --- especially if you take advantage of the Amsoil Preferred Customer Program whereby you can save approximately 20% across the board. Kinda like joining a Sam's Club.

Message: Thanks for the info. I do have another question for you which you may or may not know. Why do you not test against speciality oils? I think that amsoil is a speciality oil while royal purple is not. If i can't pick it up at wal-mart or any other local automotive parts store, then it is a speciality oil. Am I the only one that thinks this?
I have to mail order amsoil but i don't royal purple?

| Amsoil vs. Royal Purple - Moly - Amzoil IP: Logged

Royal Purple Information vs. Amsoil
As you may know, RP is big in racing circles. The chemistry they use is something we choose not to use. Amsoil's biggest selling points (separating us from the rest) is extended drain intervals. Some motor oil additive chemicals can cause adverse conditions when used for long periods.
Royal Purple uses a different chemistry than most ... and different than Amsoil. RP is one of only a handful of marketers using Moly in their oil. Moly is a solid, specifically banned by Cummins, due to excessive valve train wear.
Moly (Molybdenum Disulfide) is a processed mineral that is similar in appearance to graphite. Moly has good lubricating properties when used either by itself (in dry power form or as an additive to oil or other lubricants).
Particles of the Moly can come out of suspension and agglomerate (gather into a ball, mass, or cluster). This can actually clog oil filters or oil lines and the rest normally settles in the bottom of the oil pan. This seems to be more likely when using extended drain intervals.
The only test Amsoil ran on RP involved their 20W-50 Racing oil versus our AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 20W-50 Racing Oil(TRO). Amsoil ran two 4 ball wear tests with different parameters, a spectrographic baseline, FTIR scan and volatility tests. The Royal Purple showed a significantly high volatility rate with a 12.51% boil off rate. This compares to Amsoil with a 4.47% volatility rating. Wear scars were also smaller with Amsoil. For example, Amsoil left a .41mm scar and the RP oil left a .66mm scar. There was also a surprising difference in the viscosity index. The RP has a VI of 129 versus 155 for Amsoil. The higher the VI, the better the viscosity remains constant at high temperatures. This infomation was profided by AMSOIL Tech Department, which had an independent lab test Royal Purple against AMSOIL.
