Subject: transfer case clunking
IP: Logged

Message:
i was driving around the other day and as i stepped on the gas going through 2nd gear(auto) i felt a big repeating clunk that would shake the whole truck. It continues through 3rd gear also, probably further but i don't want tokill it trying to find out. I took it to a garage and we think it is a problem in the transfer case(this is where it feels like the noises are coming from). I can drive it around but when i step on the gas a little more than usual or power up a hill, the clunking and grinding starts. At highway speeds it is ok. also when i try to put it in 4h, it makes a whining noise and i'm not sure if it is engaging. any ideas?

I kind of have the same thing. If I step on the gas a little more than usual or power up a hill, it will squeak and then start making a clunking sound. It's fine if I put it in 4h or am on the highway. For right now I either take off easy or shift into 4h and take off. I sprayed a couple of joints w/ WD-40 and noticed the transfer case looked damp (no spot on the ground) so I wiped a spot and noticed it was red so I'm guessing it's something with the transfer case (fluid level or internal part). I don't use 4 wheel drive very often but probably once a month. Am I on the right track or could this possibly be a U joint gone bad?

Just got off the phone with the dealer and he said it was the rear U-joint on the back drive shaft and wanted $150 for it. He said the part was $65 (Mopar) and $35 if they used an aftermarket part. Looks like I'll replace this one myself. Hope this helps fix yours hurtin Dak.

well, got it taken care of, only $127 (better than the $300+ i was expecting). Turns out i had a broken snap ring and some broken sleeves(?? small plastic looking rectangular pieces) in the transfer case. The mechanic thinks it may have been due to my body lift. Suspects that the lower boot was pushing my 4x4 shifter back enough to the point where it was trying to start engaging 4high. Im no mechanic, so whatever, at least i got my baby back
