Subject: Weight of my Dakota IP: Logged
Message: This may have been discussed before, but is there a label somewhere indicating the total weight of my 2000 Dakota Club SLT?
I'm thinking about purchasing jack stands to make rotating tires a little easier and want to make sure I get jack stands with the proper weight tolerance.
Regarsd to all,
David

There's a sticker on the door pillar with the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR); but's that not what you're looking for.
The only way to know what your truck weighs is to weigh it. Look for "truck scales" or "public scales" in the yellow pages. You'll usually find them in the warehouse district of a city or near packing sheds in agricultural areas. Cost me ten bucks to have my truck weighed: front axle, rear axle, both axles. Subtract the weight from the GVWR and you'll know the available payload. Don't be surprised if it is less than you thought.
Now, about jackstands. Just make sure they are rated for a working load of at least 5,000 pounds per pair and you're fine. If you are especially concerned, spend the extra money for heavy-duty jackstands and feel safe.
cheers,
-J.

Message: Edmunds lists the 2000 Club Cab 4x4 Sport at 4042. Mine actually weighs 4980, with a full tank of gas, a 200-pound Snugtop, and 200-pound me aboard. Meaning the optional equipment weighs about 400 pounds. The only way to know what your truck weighs is to weigh it.

Message: I've seen big scales at some gas stations as well, sometimes if you aren't looking for a certified printout you can just park on it and ask the attendant what it's reading for no charge.

Message: Public accessible landfills will also weigh your vehicle for free - thats' how they know how much to charge you. They weigh you coming in and going out and then charge for the difference.
