Subject: Winter Preparation = Amsoil Protection

Message:

Just an FYI now that Winter Driving Season is upon us.

Three Critical Concerns for Confident Cold Weather Travel

All vehicles need attention from time to time, but here in the wintertime your Dakota needs extra care. For confident winter starts, it is important to keep a watch on three critical areas: the lubrication system, the cooling system and the battery. Let's take a quick look under the hood to see if you're ready for the worst of Old Man Winter.

Check Your Motor Oil

It is important to check your motor oil levels on a regular basis. Without lubrication, friction between moving parts leads to engine wear.

But it is also important to think about the type of motor oil you are using. For severe cold, there is a significant performance difference between synthetic and conventional motor oil.

Cold weather is tough on engines because of the limitations of traditional lubricants. Motor oils and greases become thicker, thus slowing starting rpm, restricting oil flow to critical engine parts, increasing wear on bearings and rings, decreasing engine life, and increasing the burden on an already overtaxed starting system.

For really cold weather, only Synthetic Motor Oils and Lubricants offer the kind of performance that allows cars and trucks to start with ease. Many synthetic motor oils still flow or pump at temperatures up to sixty and seventy below zero ... and synthetics have a broader service range than traditional petroleum.

The admonition to check your motor oil is intended as a reminder to not only watch fluid levels, but to consider whether your motor oil is fulfilling its lubricating function in severe weather. No sense in being stranded on an isolated road because your engine couldn't turn over.

Check Your Antifreeze

If you are in a hostile winter region ... you are aware that inadequate antifreeze in the engine's cooling system can result in serious damage to your vehicle. When water freezes it expands, putting high stress on the corridors where it travels. A cracked engine block is not unlikely in extreme cold. Water pump failure and blown hoses are also common side effects from frozen cooling systems.

There are a number of relatively inexpensive antifreeze testers available for measuring the effective working temperature of your antifreeze. If you don't own one of these gauges, be sure to have the radiator fluid checked at your local service station to make sure it is suitable for severe cold temperatures.

In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the hazards associated with traditional Ethylene Glycol antifreeze. EG-based antifreeze is not only considered an environmental hazard and deadly for pets when spilled on the ground, it is toxic for children. What is especially bad is that Ethylene Glycol-based antifreeze has a sweet taste that invites animals and children to ingest it.

An alternative to Ethylene Glycol antifreeze is the new Propylene Glycol which is generally regarded as safe even in the event of accidental ingestion. In addition, it has an unpleasant taste, making it unlikely that animals or children will drink any appreciable amount. Propylene Glycol provides excellent protection against freezing, boiling and corrosion. In addition, the new AMSOIL Propylene Glycol Antifreeze is compatible with all other antifreeze products and does not require a complete system flush before usage.

Check Your Battery

The ideal operating temperature of your car battery is 80 degrees F. As temperatures drop, so does the efficiency of the battery. In very cold weather, the battery's power output can be diminished to as little as ten percent.

What's more, as batteries age their strength is further reduced. When it is very cold and your older battery has lost a measure of its cranking capacity, you have a situation where it may not have the power to turn over the engine.

Cold winter starts are harsh. If the motor oil is not fluid, and the battery worn down, you may want to have your cellular phone handy in case you need to call for help.

Be Prepared

It never hurts to be prepared, as the Boy Scouts are fond of saying. Even when you follow these routine maintenance checks it is still wise to stock the usual survival supplies as standard procedure for your vehicle - shovel, bag of sand or grit, toolbox, jumper cables, fuel de-icer additive, large flashlight and road flares. Extra blankets, clothes, food, fluids and a first aid kit are a life insurance policy that you hope you won't ever need, but sometimes can't afford to be without.

Good snow tires, and a few seasons of experience driving on slippery roads also helps ... and knowing when not to attempt driving at all.

Anybody know where I can buy Amsoil here in the Phoenix Arizona area?

While my Dak has that (dreaded) maintenance plan with the dealer (getting whatever they stick in it), I declined that maintenance package on our 2004 Grand Caravan. It needs another oil change and every 3000 miles is a pain. How many miles can I go on Amsoil?

A store had "Royal Purple" and claimed like 10k miles. I didn't buy it because I know nothing about that stuff. Could be junk for all I know.
What do you think?

Graphite go to bobistheoilguy.com and do some research. Royal Purple got a bad rap for thinning out but they have fixed that I believe. Same for Mobil 1. My advice would be Mobil 1 0-40. Very good for the temp`s you see year round. You probably could go 10,000 easy. Depends on how well the Caravan is running, oil sump capacity, how hard the motor is on oil, etc.

Amsoil would be a good choice too,but Mobil 1 is just easier to get and is only marginally better IMHO.

Do an oil analysis at 5-7k to see how the oil is holding up(and maybe catch an engine problem early) and go from there.

How many miles, what motor, and sump capacity is in the Caravan?

Winter Preparation = Amsoil Protection - NO MOLY
IP: Logged

Message:

To MOLY or NOT to MOLY ... that is the question ...

..... at least one of them ...

Royal Purple Information vs. Amsoil

As you all may know, Royal Purple (RP) is big in racing circles. The chemistry they use is something Amsoil chooses NOT to use. Amsoil's biggest selling points (separating us from the rest) is extended drain intervals. Some motor oil additive chemicals can cause adverse conditions when used for long periods ... for instance ... MOLT.

Royal Purple uses a different chemistry than most ... and different than Amsoil. RP is one of only a handful of marketers using Moly in their oil. Moly is a solid, specifically banned by Cummins, due to excessive valve train wear.

Moly (Molybdenum Disulfide) is a processed mineral that is similar in appearance to graphite. Moly has good lubricating properties when used either by itself (in dry power form or as an additive to oil or other lubricants).

Particles of the Moly can come out of suspension and agglomerate (gather into a ball, mass, or cluster). This can actually clog oil filters or oil lines and the rest normally settles in the bottom of the oil pan. This seems to be more likely when using extended drain intervals.

The only test Amsoil ran on RP involved their 20W-50 Racing oil versus our AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 20W-50 Racing Oil(TRO). Amsoil ran two 4 ball wear tests with different parameters, a spectrographic baseline, FTIR scan and volatility tests. The Royal Purple showed a significantly high volatility rate with a 12.51% boil off rate. This compares to Amsoil with a 4.47% volatility rating. Wear scars were also smaller with Amsoil. For example, Amsoil left a .41mm scar and the RP oil left a .66mm scar. There was also a surprising difference in the viscosity index. The RP has a VI of 129 versus 155 for Amsoil. The higher the VI, the better the viscosity remains constant at high temperatures. This infomation was profided by AMSOIL Tech Department, which had an independent lab test Royal Purple against AMSOIL.

jeremiah2360, the Grand Caravan is a 2004 3.8 Liter pushrod V6.
My Dakota is the same as yours except I have 20k miles less (because I drive a company vehicle to work).

That RP sounds scary to use if it has something that could cause problems. Especially in my 4.7

I'll check out the online deal for Amsoil. How long does it take to receive an order?
We are driving to disneyland in a week and a half. Need to change the oil before then

What can I say ... nah ... I did not ignore your post.

Joe Gibbs Racing Oil is NOT available until mid-December. How can I comment? I no of no one that is using it. I have seen no reports. I have seen no Oil Analysis against other oils. Seems as though Joe Gibbs Racing likes it ... but racing oil is different than the oil you would use in a daily driver. We will wait and see.

OK. I ordered from the link you posted.

Does that stuff really go up to 25k miles or 1 year with only replacing the filter?
So far the Caravan only has 14K miles on it now.
If I like the oil I'll start using it in the Dak as soon as that P.I.T.A. pre paid maintenance contract ends. I think that's at 36k miles.

I've got a quad that could use some of that stuff too. What are you using QuadRider?

Graphite, spend some time on bobistheoilguy.com especially if your interested in long drain intervals. I doubt you could go 25k,maybe 9k(3x the recommended interval).

Steve I think your "spin" on moly is a bit misleading. A lot of the oil geeks like seeing moly from what I have read.
