Subject: 2000 Dakota 3.9L Tune UP IP: Logged
Message: After 54k I have decided to give the old girl a tune up. With the forums help I have bought 7.5mm wires, autolite 3923, and another drop in K&N. Pep Boys says that I have electronic ignition, so no cap and rotor??? Is this true? Anything else to add to my tune up? PCV Valve,Oxygen sensor...???

Message: Aaron,
What kind of wires did you buy?
Yes, add a PCV valve, too.

Message: If you have a 3.9, then you have a cap and rotor. Get the Borg-Warner Cap and rotor from Pep Boys. If I remember correctly, they added up to $12. If they don't list your 2000, then just get one for a 98 or 99 truck, thats what I did. They are all the same at least back to 98.
If you already had a K&N, why didn't you just get the cleaning kit? Those filters are designed to be cleaned and re-used. I think the cleaning kit is only like $10, verses a new filter (something over $30?) If you didn't use it yet, you might consider returning it and just cleaning your filter.

Message: I bought HP Mopar's. They let me have them for wholesale($42). Do you know if the 2000 3.9L has electronic ignition? I want to start my tune up but I don't know if I need to buy the cap and rotor.
Thanks

Message: I went to Advance auto parts and they said that I have electronic ignition too. Looked under the hood and it looks like I have a distributor. Went to speedtweeks.com and they list the cap and rotor but they don't have a year designation in description. Who is the idiot, me or them?

Message: Yes you have a cap and roter. There the idiots. The rotor should be at the back of the engine near the fire wall. Do what lattimer said and ask for a 99 cap and rotor.

Message: You can have electronic ignition AND a cap & rotor at the same time. If you don't have a cap & rotor, you have a crank trigger and a coil above each spark plug, take a look.

Message: I have used two sets of wires. The first set was the Mopar 7.5mm I liked them but ended up breaking one while pulling them off to regap my plugs. The boot seperated right in the middle of it. The ones I have now are the MSD 8.5mm So far so good I would recommend either set. I have also added an MSD 6A ignition box. It works better with the MSD wires(just my opinion). When I had the Mopar wires and MSD box together my engine seemed to idle weird but that is just my observation.
