Subject: Missing a lug nut? IP: Logged
Message: Will it hurt anything to only have five lug nuts on instead of six. I recently had a local auto shop strip one and they left it loose. Now it has fallen off and the bolt that holds it on did too. I was just wondering if it is going to hurt anything until I can get it fixed. Thanks.

Message: Yes! a missing lug and/or lug-nut will hurt something. most importantly, that lug that fell out of the hole could lock your wheel. It is either inside the drum or if disk-brakes, then ready to bind against the stationary part of the spindle assembly. I wouldn't drive another inch until at the very least I made sure that the lug was not going to ruin my life. Then get a new lug and nut installed.

Message: How many trucks are out there doing heavy work/towing with 5 lugs? Tens of thousands, that's how many. So, can you drive around with "only" five until you get it fixed? Sure you can, don't sweat it. Winston cup cars go 600 hard miles with "only" 5 lug nuts.

Message: Bob, your not very bright. He said there are 6 lugs, and one is missing. That is clearly not the same as a truck with 5 lugs. There is a reason Winston cup cars don't exist you moron. Nextel cup cars can't run with 4 lugs, because they were disigned for 5.

Message: Jeremy, use your head for something besides a hat rack. Did you not understand the message? Or are you hung up on minutia?
I used to own an old Jimmy, with 6 lug wheels. One of the rear lugs was broken off when I bought it, and had been for many years. I banged around in the mountains with it for a few years, did some hauling, drove the freeway. It was still missing when I sold it a couple of months ago. Not a problem.
If I had a broken lug on my truck today, would I stop driving it until it was fixed? No, of course not. 5 lugs is fine until he gets it fixed. I wouldn't worry about it.

Message: If the "local auto shop" broke it they should fix it. lug nut and the bolt that holds it? sounds like they overtorqued it and broke the stud . I would be questioning the quality of their work and wondering about the reliabilith of the other 5 lugs.

Message: Thanks guys. I finally got it fixed because the bolt had got inside the brake disc and was rattling around. I had originally thought that it had popped out, but it was still in there. Thanks again.

Message: As mentioned earlier. The crappy lugs that come on Dakotas are ridiculously expensive. The chrome caps kept falling off mine and I had to replace 10 of them. There is a guy on Ebay that sells them from time to time for $1 each and they look identical to the stock ones.

I'm thinking about buying 24 to do my whole truck, and tossing those capped nuts in the garbage!!

Message: I'm into the lug nut plm too. Dealer asked $5.99 for ONE wheel stud and i gave them the finger. THEY are teh ones that torqued those lug nuts to 1,454,742 ft/lbs and it took TWO guys to get it off. Ended up snapping off TWO of the 5 wheel studs on my jeep and i'm still running around with 3 and 1/2 studs.
