Subject: Cheap grill insert idea IP: Logged
Message: I've been wanting one of those mesh grille inserts for my Dak but didn't really want to spent $50 for a kit so here's what I did... Went to the local Lowes and bought a pack of the stainless steel mesh gutter guards and a pack of small zip ties. Then I took some tin snips and cut out 4 perfect sized inserts for the grille and secured them in with the zip ties behind the plastic grid. It looks just as good as any pre-made kit and only cost about $8 and 1 hour of my time. I'm sure you all already know this trick but I thought that I'd pass it on.

Message: Actually I didn't know it (yes, I will own up to an idiot after one of you calls me one). Thanks for mentioning it.

Message: How would I leave room for the hood latch access so that it doesn't leave an ugly hole? Anyone know? How do the "expensive" inserts get around that?

Message: Really all I did was cut a very small square slot just big enough to stick your finger through to release the latch. You can't hardly even notice it. Most of the pre-made kits that I've seen have a small slot cut out also. That is a very good idea though mayo. I would have never thought of that. We all learn something new every day.

Message: I did this 2 weeks back. Came out great. Right now i have a skinny metal rod that i keep under the rear seats. It fits between the slots in the grate. Use it to release the hood.
Might try running a wire from the release.

Message: A few years ago, someone posted a link to their site about this DIY grille inserts.
ONLY, this guy made a pattern on the holes and cut two pieces of plywood, one being the inner, and one being the outer. He then hammered the gutter guard inbetween, for that custom, poofed out look.
I wish I could find the link to his site again, and yes, I did search. I want to do this for my 01, SLT,

Message: Check this link out. It was an earlier Street Scene Group buy forum. The guy did all his own work and included pictures.

Looks pretty clean and I'm seriously considering it after seeing it myself. Although mine will need to be gloss black.

Message: did the gutter guard thing on my '00 QC Sport. gloss black looks great with the white grille & black bumper. cut those black plastic things out of the grille, cut the gutter guard to the contour of the openings then used #6 self tapping screws w/ washers to screw the grille from the back. drilled a hole in the hood latch, straightened a coat hanger out and fashioned a long handle that hangs below the grille. just pop the latch inside and reach under the bottom of the grille and pull that coat hanger. works great. even impressed my 17 yr old and all his friends

Message: the latch thing is done with a spare piece of brake cable from a bike . You make a hole on the latch middle section and thread the cable and attach ....... rub cable down in middle of grill , wire tie to the metal frame of the grill and put a ring from a key chai on the bottom feel for the ring and pull and it's opened ....
