Subject: Help!!! (axle shafts) IP: Logged
Message: Hi I have a 2000 4x4 and just recently the front driver side axle shaft seal started leeking. I have been trying to replace it but cant figure out how to seperate the axle shaft from the front diff. I was wondering if I have to open the diff to release a clip or something. Could someone please give me some answers, this seems like a simple replacement that will save me money by not going to the shop.

Message: 1. Remove the front wheel.
2. Reference mark and disconnect the drive axle from the axleshaft flanges at the differential.
3. Remove the differential cover bolts, drain the lubricant and remove the cover.
4. Rotate the differential case so the pinion shaft lock bolt is accesable.
5. Remove the lock bolt and pinion shaft.
6. Force the left axleshaft toward the center of the vehicle and remove the C-clip retainer from the recessed groove at the axleshaft end.
7. Using care to prevent damage to the axleshaft bearing, remove the left axleshaft from the differential housing. Good luck. Dan

Message: I just did this this weekend. Pull hard. really hard. whack it with a hammer or a pry bar. one solid sudden jolt will bust the retaining clip loose. It is how the mechanics do it and its how I did it. I sure as hell would want to open up my diff just to remove the half shaft.

Message: He said he was having trouble getting the axle shaft out,not the half-shaft. If you pounded the axle hard enough to break the retainer C-Clip you would have some serious damage to the carrier and the shaft. Some half-shafts have a round cross section retainer clip which snaps free if you smack it. My 94 has square cross section retainer clips that have to be manually released by digging through the grease to get at it and releasing it with a tool.
