Subject: cat converter or what? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1998 Dakota Sport V-6, 54,000 miles.
Major difficulties. How do I know if my cat converter is bad? What about symptoms of bad 02 sensor? Engine light on, code for Idle control sensor. Replaced, still symptoms, cutting out, holding back, idle high on and off. 5-speed if it matters. Please help, it looks beautiful in my garage, but for the price I paid, I would like to drive it sometime.

Message: it may just need a tuneup (plugs, wires, cap/rotor) maybe the TPS (throttle positon sensor) could be bad (causing the surging you described in another post)
Also, you may try to reset the PCM... unhook the negative battery cable, and hold the key to the start positon for ~30 seocnds.. then reconnect and start your dakota. don't toutch the gas pedal, let it idle for about 1 min (it might run rough, its just the computer re-learning the settings). shut it off and start it again, and let it run for the same amount of time.. shut it off again, then you can drive it normally. that should clear the stored fault codes out of the computer....

Message: I think the cat and emissions have an 8 year warranty, ask the Stealership.

Message: Correct. That is federal law. But don't be surprised if they charge an $80 diagnostic fee.

Message: At 54,000 mi your converter should be fine.Could be a fuel injector or water in gas problem.Get injectors checked. If it turns out to be a water problem your gas line to the tank is probably steel and will rust, only way to solve the rust problem is to replace gas line or put an inline gas filter just before the gas line goes into the fuel rail.Good luck,Tom

Message: In addition to what the othes have suggested.
A bad o2 sensor will cause the cat to fail. A good sympton of a bad o2 sensor is worse than normal gas milage. These should be inspected every 30,000 miles. Personally, i'm in the habbit of changing mine then. They're are relatively cheap and easy to replace.
A bad cat will produce a rattling sound. After doing the above (tune up, reset pcm, etc), start the vehicle, and take a listen under the truck for a rattling sounds from the cat.
testing the cat is free at muffler places, what they'll do is usually just check the temp before and after the cat, should be about 100 degree difference. If the cat is bad, you have other issues.

Must be a newbe.? My 99 had a bad cat at 19k. Do a search on here you will find many others that had similar experiences.
Tina, there is no need to replace any fuel lines or add additional filters.

Message: When you replaced the AIS, did you clean its throttle body passage thoroughly? If not, the new one won't work properly if the air passage is clogged up with gum and carbon. Take the sensor off, spray lots of carb cleaner into the opening, let it sit awhile, reinstall AIS and run it. Or better still, remove throttle body for thorough cleaning.
