Message: Had the u-joints on the rear driveshaft checked - both OK. Shaft weights - all in place. Wheel weights - all in place. WTF is causing the vibration?????

Message: I have had vibration at 35 then again around 63 mph for a long time in 1999 Dakota 4x4 v8 automatic trans. I had tires rebalanced 3 times and rotated. Replaced upper ball joints. Replaced all 4 shocks with Sensa Tracs which greatly improved the handling of this truck and stopped the nose diving. Still no improvement on the vibration tho. I hear the front rotors warp on Dakotas so I was going to try the drilled slotted rotors next, and also have the drive shafts rebalanced. This should not be happening on a truck with 45,000 miles. I will be buying a Toyota or a Nissan next time.

Message: I had it at 70-75 mph. I think I've gotten my wheels rebalanced 4 times now. Each time it stops, then I jump a small curb or something and it comes back again. Seems like the front end geometry of our trucks makes them especially prone to get thrown out of whack with small jolts that aren't a problem for most other trucks. But don't worry, eventually with this truck you will become a top notch expert at diagnosing front end symptoms.

Message: Hey go easy on the guy "Good". I too love my Dakota, but I also admit that the damn thing is chock full of problems. It's the style that attracted me to it, not it's reliability issues. Had I known then what I know now, I would've stuck with Japanese vehicles. Unfortunately I still owe about $9000 on this $28000 truck. As soon as it is paid off, I'm trading it in on something that is built better and designed better.
I'll bet a lot of people feel that way about their Dakotas and Durangos. So go easy. Instead of beating people up, use a little positive reinforcement. Sheesh.

Message: Maybe it is a given but has anyone had their alignment checked? This also will cause the same problems. As for the reliability, I have a 03 dak with 30,000 miles on it with no major problems. You guys having your stuff fixed over and over again, are you sure the work being done is quality work? Eddy, if rebalancing your tires solves the problems you are having then the problem is with the tires, if it is with the front end of the truck, the tires would not stop it, balanced or not... Its a good truck, but every brand out there has its problems.
I would start out with tires (balancing and rotating), front end alignment, brake rotors and then move onto the drive shaft and such. And make sure you have a reputable shop do the work, it may be a great job for a week or two, but if the shop does not finish the job correctly (like tightening bolts correctly and such) then that money is right down the drain.

Message: This is going to sound crazy, but have your tires checked to see if they are round. I had a vibration that drove me nuts for quite a while. With the wheels & tires on a spin balancer I could clearly see that they were not round. The guy at the tire shop said he's seen it before, especially with larger tires. I ended up replacing the existing tires with a different set...problem solved.

Message: I had a vibration at 40mph, very slight. Dealer said he couldn't feel it. Had the wheel balance checked, and 3 wheels were out of balance. After that, the vibration improved, but didn't go away completely until 2000 miles later. It was probably a combo of the wheels out of balance and uneven tire wear.
