Subject: Basic Tune-up IP: Logged
Message: I've got a '98 Dakota 3.9L V-6 and am trying to get the damned thing in running order. Need to change tranny fluid and filter (not shifting into gear properly) and probably a basic tune-up. I was told by the Dodge Dealership that it was nothing other than spark-plug changing and checking the distributor cap. My owners manual has no OEM recommendations for plugs or fluids. What is the bare basic---no hot-rod stuff. I'm not a gearhead by any stretch so please, dumb it down for a newbee. Thanks

Message: Forget the tune-up and get rid of the thing, NOW!
That tranny is gonna cost you a ton of money to
replace PLUS replacements are no good either.
Good luck.

Message: Afraid they could be right. Before spending another dime, have the trans checked by a pro.
Otherwise, a good tune up inlcudes air filter, PCV valve, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Everything else is computer controlled and generally does not need replacing.
High mileage trucks need additional work, usually. Consider changing O2 sensors, cleaning the throttle body and EGR valve, check the coil, and flush/fill the radiator.
