Message:
i have a 97 dakota with a 2.5l 4cyl, and lately it just dies for no reason, even while im driving in gear, the engine dies and the truck wont start for a while. then it will run fine for a short period of time and it does it agian. It isnt tripping any trouble codes and the check engine light does not come on. I replaced my cap and rotor, wires and plugs, fuel pump, and ran fuel injector cleaner through it. It still does it, and i havent been able to figure out why. I checked my map sensor with a multimeter and it was ok. If you have any ideas or know somebody that has had the same problem, please let me know.

Try the fuel pump.
If it quit working it may not give a code. There's no code for running out of gas :-P

If you get a schematic you could try energizing the fuel pump manually out at the relay box. If it comes on by jumping it then it could be the PCM overheating or something. If it still doesn't run then probably a bad fuel pump.
If it is, you're lucky it restarts after a bit. Many times once they quit, that't it. Oh, and they usually quit when you turn it off and go to restart. Never had one quit while driving.

A while ago I had this problem on a different vehicle and it turned out to be bad loose wiring from the ignition coil.

Could be the ignition coil, could be the magnetic pickup in the distributor. These are known to be problems.
