Subject: Before I hang myself... IP: Logged
Message: Folks,
Spent my Saturday machine polishing my white Dodge Dakota and waxing it. This was my first time with a machine, so I was careful and I did a decent polishing job. Then came the wax. It was a Part II application of a Polyglycoat system.
Anyway, I hand applied it to the cab roof and the sides of my windows. My truck is all white except the right window sills (if that's the correct word) are painted black. Used the machine on a low setting to buff off the wax on the roof with no problem, but then I started on the driver's side black window sill, and all hell broke loose. I've included a picture of the mess here:

Can some of you guys and/or gals who are good at body work tell me what I need to do to repair this disaster? I'd like to see if I can do it myself, if possible, in hopes of redeeming myself (and if I fail once more, I can always bring it to a body shop).
Incidentally, the rest of the truck looks great :-)
Thanks to all who respond,
David

Message: that is a sticky piece kindof like a decal between the window and the back window, i think the only way to repair it is to have it replaced by a professional bodyshop. it shouldnt be that much to repair.

Message: Yup, that's a black decal, I scratched through the edge of mine loading something into the truck. Did you burn through the decal or is this wax buildup? If you burned through the decal, remove the decal with a heat gun and get a replacement decal from Dodge.
Only probelm I can see is the stealership gouging you an arm and a leg for the stinking decal.

Message: A hair dryer is uaually enough heat for decal removal. Easy to get too hot with high heat gun setting, if you're not used to it.

address and give me so money for shipping i will send you some
for free. I can just messure it up with the vinyl on my dak.

Message: Thanks to all who replied. I feel a little better about myself now knowing that it was a decal I burned through, rather than body paint. If I would have known it was a decal in the first place, I never would have used the machine buffer on it.
DSW: I burned through the decal--no wax build up.
DSW & Kowalski: Okay, so if I use a hair dryer, is there a technique I should use to get the decal off the quickest and cleanest way? Or do I simply apply heat in a corner, the whole decal?
Thanks again,
David

Message: Dude, are you retarded or what? How the hell could you not realize that was a decal and not paint?! I think you should not be allowed to run any kind of motorized tool if you can't determine what the hell you are buffing before you do it. How about the windows, did you get those nice and shiny? Ha Ha Ha!! I can barely contain myself!!

Message: Ah, now you blew my cover--I am a retard.
That aside, how was I to know that Dodge would glue on a cheaper decal, instead of just painting it black? You really can't tell the difference, in my opinion--but I am retarted, so that can account for it.
Incidentally, I prefer "mentally challenged"...

Message: Flaming Aholes, like they never skrewed the pooch before.
Take a hair dryer and get the entire decal hot, should take a couple of minutes for the heat to sink through the decal and get the metal toasty warm. Once it's warm you can peel up an edge an sloooowly pull the decal off, while applying heat to the departing edge and the rest of the decal. If you use a heat gun don't go crazy with the heat as you could burn up the window molding or paint.

For the record I personally DO wax my windows. It makes them easy to keep clean and it beads up quickly which allows the rain to be much less obstructing. Kinda like Rain-X for cheapskates..

Message: Greetings
I have ordered the replacement decal from the dealership, and I'm wondering if someone can walk me through putting this on.
One question I have already is that the decal wraps around the edge of the door and is slightly covered by a seal that runs from the top to the bottom of the door interior. How do I get this off gracefully, and what do I need to use to reattach it?
Again. a thousand thanks for the words of advise.

Message: Yup decals blow. I am always real careful when I wax around my 4x4 and sport decals do them by hand. It should be painted white underneath. Why not just have a white bar between the window and the club? May lock different. As far as puting on decals you may just want to pay the body shop to do it. I think when I got rear ended the decal was like 80 bucks and the application was 20. Save yourself the heartache of screwing it up and have a pro do it. my two cents.
Good luck. BTW do you wash your buffer bonnets or just throw them away?
