Subject: Trans pump? IP: Logged
Message: I had my brother-in-law install a fresh A904 trans into my 87 Dakota. When I test drove it, it made a hell of a noise. Come to find out the bolts on the torque converter and flex plate were all loose. He tightend them up good. After about 80 miles the trans gradually slipped until it wouldn't move anymore. It now sits at my jobsite. I called a tranny shop (Kennedy) and they say most likely the torque converter bolt episode cost me the loss of the pump. My brother in law doesn't believe it. Can anyone help us understand this?

Message: alright i,ll try,
the flex plate bolts to the crank
the torque convertor bolts to the flex plate
the convertor goes into the pump
the pump moves the fluid threw the trans
now if the flex plate and the convertor are both
loose it could break the pump and it could also break the convertor[the convertor drives the pump]
if one or both break [theres a good chance that one is your problem]then you,ll have NO go when in gear
DON,T DRIVE OR TRY TO DRIVE this will burn -up the trans clutches,
pull the trans dip stick and look at the fluid,
does it still look good?it should look like it does when poured from the bottle
now smell the fluid if it has a foul burnt smell and dark in color the clutches are burnt, time for a rebuild or different trans
hope this helps some and good luck
