Subject: need fog lights to turn off with highs IP: Logged
Message: I have an 04 dakota, I installed the pilot dakota fog light kit. it has a relay with power and ground and then from the relay a power line into the cab to a switch with a ground for it's illumination and a wire that needs to be connected to a 12volt switched or constant source. I connected it to the cig light + so they could be on whenever the truck is on, and not when it is off. I just moved to PA, the fog lights have to go off when the high beams are on. Can someone help? how do i fix it, I was thinking moving the switch 12v from the switch to the pos lo beam wire. any ideas, if that is right please tell which wire and where it is need to fix this

Message: Yes, it is a law that they have to be off with highs. However, nobody should ever see them, much less hassle you about it.
I live in PA and just REwired my factory fogs to stay on with highs. The added light is well worth it to me. Really lights up the sides.
You should be able to move the relay activation wire for your fogs to the low beam relay activation line and acomplish your goal if you still want to do it.

Message: Just curious, but why exactly is it against the law to have em both on at the same time? If somebody drives by you with their highs on, you're gonna be blind anyway...2 more ain't gonna make a difference. And then caulk04 has a good point...nobody should see them. You shouldn't have your highs on when people are close enough to see your fogs anyway.

Message: I FAILED state inspection, I have to correct it, that was why I failed I have only so many days to fix it without extra cost. That lo beam relay activation wire, where can I find that, what color is it.
The dude said fix it or remove it at the inspection station, I agree I like having them independant but I also like having it inspected.

Message: I would just deactivate the fogs all together just to get it through inspection. Then reconnect once you have passed. I don't believe the is a law that states that your fog lights have to work at all. They are optional equipment. Just a thought.

Message: In PA, if there is a light on the vehicle, it has to work ... and work according to PA's arbitrary laws. Only reason I can think of to have this law (and many others) is the legislators justifying their own existence. You could always just remove the foglights to get inspected, then replace them after inspection; but, in this scenario, you're risking a ticket from the State Police.

Message: Its a retarded law, and most inspection stations won't say a thing about fogs and highs. You may want to find a new station IMO...
I couldn't tell you what the wire is, but you could probably just probe some wires in your plug at the light switch and find the right one. You could also probably install a swithc somewhere under that dash to let you switch between 'legal' and 'illegal' at your discretion.

Message: I don't have a diagram handy, I'll see what I can find. The easiest thing would be to remove them(the lights) get the sticker, then wire it up right and reinstall. Stupid or not it's the law. If a station gets caught passing something that shouldn't they get fined, and possibly lose their license for 3-6 months. The revenue that station make from inspections will be reduced drsamatically, possibly causing 1 or more techs their job and in extreme cases the shop to close down. The state is also starting to crack down on alot of the lick and sticks. Now it might seem trivial to you but it's more complicated than you think.

Message: If I were doing the install, this is what I would do:
Get a double throw relay from and auto parts store, (one with normally open and normally closed contacts) they are usually under $5. Hook a constant power source to one of the normally closed contacts and hook the load wire for the fogs to the other normally closed contact. Then tap the positive wire from the high beams to the relay coil. When the highs are activated, the relay will 'throw' and disconnect the fogs. This way the fogs will work with both the lows and just the running lights, but not with the highs. You can identify the wires you need with a basic multimeter. Everyone doing any level of this type of project should have one.

Message: BTW, the power source for the fog switch should be from a source that is only on with the accessory position on the ignition (like you said you have). But make sure the circut can handle the extra load. If you cannot find such a circut, then hook the coil wire from the included relay to the running light positive and tap directly off the battery (with an in-line fuse)for the line and load to the fogs, but with the added relay I spoke of above. This way the included relay will only be wearing out when the running or lows are on. No sense having the relay energized when it isn't needed.

Message: I installed a set of after market fog lights on my dakota. They stay on when i hit the high beams. It's simple, don't wire it to your head lamps. Mine are wired directly to the battery so I don't need a key-on scenario to turn them on. You can wire them to the head lamps so they shut off when you hit the high beams. You can also wire them to a key on device so that you can't run your battery down by leaving the fog lights on.
My after maket lights came with wiring diagrams that showed how to wire for each situation.
Try calling the dealership for factory lights or the manufacturer for after market, they should be able to provide a wiring diagram.

Message: MoparMadness- Shoot me an email caulk_j@yahoo.com and I'll look up where I found the wiring instructions. Very simple, two wires behind the driver side kick panel.
BTW - Mine is an 02. I'm sure it works this way for 01 and on, but not sure if the wires are same in previous years. I searched and read through posts to find my directions.

Message: wow this went all over the place. The lights draw power from the battery. The wiring goes like this
BATT
+-
||
Relay ::::::> On/Off wire to switch, 12v+
|||| Relay activation wire from
switch
+-+-
To Lights
This is like the KC setup. Basically all I had to do is move the 12v+ relay activation wire from the ignition source it was on to the low beam positive, I tapped the purple wire at the harness. Used a light tester, works beautiful and legally, which is all I wanted. And I got the sticker. This only allows the fogs to be on with low beam and not high beam, luckily I got a decent kit that let me do it easier, then if I had just a wire /switch/ battery setup, which isn't bad but would be a lot harder to make legal. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP!!!! THIS SITE RAWKS!
