Subject: Temperature Gauge Problem IP: Logged
Message: My 99 3.9L V6 is doing strange things with the temperature gauge. The gauge will go from normal up to the red zone and then back down to normal, this will all happen in a span of about 30 seconds. It ususally happens after I've been driving stop the car and then resume driving shortly after stopping. The engine can't actually be getting that hot and then cooling down that rapidly can it? Any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks.

Message: This is pretty common. The first time I saw it was on my Dad's Dodge 318 Maxivan, in about 1976. Water circulates through the system, and is a fairly consistant temp. When you shut it off, it stops circulating. The water near the top (where the sender is) tends to cool a little bit. But the water in the heads sits there and gets hotter. When you start the engine, that really hot water now comes in contact with the sender, and the gauge spikes. Then, as the water circulates, it quickly cools down again.
Bottom line, don't worry about it.
