Subject: Thunderform space?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '98 Dakota SLT with the extended cab, and I just purchased a thunderform for it. I currently have an amplifier mounted in it that is about 8" X 8" X 3.5", and don't know where to move it to. Any ideas/comments/suggestions would be great. Thanks a bunch!!!

Same here, but I dont think that a 3.5" high amp will fit, If you go that route, you may need to purchase a slimmer amp.

I looked at it and there isn't enough room under the seats to do it. Is there any room left over inside the thunderform box itself for a second amp?

This is the exact problem I was talking about in the Thunderform thread under the "Group Buys" topic...

There just isn't enough room under the seats to put a decent amp... and when you try to "wedge" it in there... you either a) scrape it or b) it sticks out and the seat doesn't go all the way back.

Also, there is just not enough air circulation room under the seats to make sure it stays cool..

This is why I got an "amped version"... not as much boom, but at least I didn't have to worry about amp location.

Personally, if you can find an amp small enough, you may be able to mount one in the jack location. My installer mentioned that, but I didn't want him to do any custom cutting on my box. But maybe you can give it a try...

Thanks a bunch...but it is actually not an amp...it is a control box, but it looks like an amp...it is a control box for a siren...I am on the Fire Department, and I need to re-locate it. I'll give it a try in the jack location...if that doesn't work, I'll just have to put it in the floor in my back seat...unless anyone has any more ideas...

You would be surprised at what will fit under the seats. My amps are (estimate) over 3" tall, they are older Precision Power amps. THey stuck out in back of the seat, so I built a little cover over them so nothing or nobody lands on them. Cooling has not been a problem, they are big amps and generate a lot of heat, but the thermal overloads have never kicked in. I have the 4-channel (4x 75 rms) under the driver's seat, and the 2 channel (2 x 250 RMS) under the passenger seat. Works ok, and they've been in for over 6 months.

I have a 420 Watt (mono) Sony xplode amp under the driver seat which is pretty compact and it pushes the thunderform just fine...the gain is only at the 1/2 way point

After looking under my seat, there is a surprising amount of space...if you need a place to mount something, it may fit under there. There is a space about 4" high...Thanks for all your help! Does anyone know if there are any wires running under the seat? if I cut the carpeting, am I gonna cut any wires?

As long as you have manual seats, there shouldn't be any wires under there to cut. I am not sure about with power seats though. I cut several holes in mine to get all the wires through, and I never came across anything.
