I just bought a used 89 Dakota 4X4 short box V6. I bought it from a dealership. One question, this might sound dumb but, what is the proper way to engage the 4 wheel drive? I didnt get an owners manual with the truck and the dealer wasnt 100% sure either. Do I move the lever while the truck is in gear, neutral, or what? And if anyone has a owners manual they wouldnt mind scanning or even selling to me that would be great.

Congratulations on your first purchase. The folks here are very knowledgeable and helpful.

My '95 is shift on the fly, though I can't say I have ever used it that much. Usually i know when i get into the truck if i need 4 wheel or not. When I have used it, i was traveling less than 45 mph. Also, NEVER shift into 4 low unless you are stopped and NEVER exceed 30mph, be sure to ALWAYS watch the tach in 4 low. Also, it may take a bit of rocking to get into 4 low, the gears have to be lined up perfectly or it won't engage and lock, it'll pop out or simply won't go into gear. It's VERY easy to redline in 4 low.

I've used 4 low once, some pothead driving in a snow storm in a honda accord ran me off the road into a ditch. He couldn't sleep so he decided to drive country roads smokin' it up.

That is something the dodge dealer should have known or should be able to look up. Did you inquire about them getting you an owners manual? You may try some local salvage yards.

Congrats on the purchase nlberg!
I don't have a spare owners manual but both Dak's I've owned both recommended that the truck be slowed to 3 - 5 mph then select 4 Hi or 4 Low. The alternative is to stop completely and then switch.
I've switched to 4 Hi at 10 mph without any apparent ill effects but I would not recommend doing that too often it might be considered "abuse" god only knows what might blow up if you're zipping along at 30 and flip that switch!
HTH!

I didnt get the truck at the Dodge dealership. I actually got it at an auction for dirt cheap. The body has brand new paint and the truck has only 99420 miles/160000km, new tires, brakes and exhaust.
