Subject: Loose Calipers IP: Logged
Message: The holes for the two bolts that go through on my front calipers are worn according to my mechanic(left side mainly). This makes a loud clacking noise whenever I brake after reversing direction and the caliper shifts. He said the whole assembly (calipers and bracket) would have to be replaced to solve the problem so just live with it.
Anyone else ever have this problem? Is there a simpler fix?

Message: Ive not had that problem, but the mechanic is right. If the holes are worn, you have to replace the calipers. Unfortunatly, they are hard to come by for your truck. You can't just walk in to Autozone and buy a set. So you'de have to buy from the dealer. Now we're talking big bux. Personally, I would just live with it.

Message: Why are they so hard to come by? Cuz of it being an 03? I replaced the calipers on my 98 Dak...walked into Advance Auto Parts and they were in the following day. Cost me an arm and a leg though...although the whole core charge thing was nice since I got $110 back from turning em in:)

Message: The aftermarket doesn't start making these kinds of parts for a while on new vehicles. AZ lists it as "unavailable".

Message: dont waste your money buying calipers from the dealership. Dodge screwed us on our brake setup, they are so cheap! If you pay for the dealership you are just going to get another crappy set of calipers that are new.

Message: Crappy brakes are better than no brakes... now if there were a lot of good aftermarket brake parts out there, that's another story.

Message: Why aren't the calipers covered by your factory warranty? You only have 40K on your 2003.

Message: Are you refering to the two holes that the caliper bolts thread into? If so just helicoil them 9mm X 1.25 kit, get it from Napa or equivelant.

Message: OK well if you just 'live with it' what happened to my friend may happen to you, ie the whole caliper assembly breaks loose and lodges itself agaisnt the inside of the rim, damaging the wheel and locking the wheel suddenly while the car is in motion.

blk4.7-the warranty is 3-36.
jjj-it`s not the threads or the bolts, the hole the bolts go in are worn.
eddy-try to think happy thoughts ;)
I do have an aftermarket warranty through Warranty Direct. I`m going to make an appointment at a local dealership. Either my intermediate shaft or something else is funky in the front end anyway(scrunchy feeling esp. in stop and go). May wait till the front bushings get noisy again.
It will be interesting to see if Warranty Direct comes through. I`m afraid they may not repair if "the vehicle is still safe to drive". If they pull that I`ll just have eddy call them for me.
Thanks for the replies everyone!

Message: Hehehehe didn't mean to be the voice of impending doom or nothing. But unless this guy is good as gold at what he does I'd start looking for another mechanic if he suggested you 'live with' a possibly loose brake caliper.

Message: maybe this is not possible, but just a suggestion. Lets say its not covered under warranty, couldnt you drill the holes out to a larger size and go to a larger bolt or put in some sort of sleeve to compensate for the difference? seems like a much cheaper way if fixing it.
