Subject: 3.7 problems? Issues
IP: Logged

Message:
I was in the "Dealer,TSBs,and Recalls" area of
this fine web site and noticed lots of threads
about the 3.7 V6 engine giving problems after a
few months of break in. Seems to be some sort of
missing problem between such and such mph and some
owners claim stalling when making stops. There are
also other problems listed with this engine.

From what I've read, DC knows of the problem but
has done nothing to correct it. Dealers are
telling owners new software is being written to
correct the problem. Some owners have been waiting
months. Some owners are now looking into the
"Lemon Law" for their state.

My questions are;

1) You 3.7 V6 owners, Is this just Dakotas for 04
and now 05's or is the Jeep Liberty's 3.7 giving
the same problem?

2) Besides this NEW issue for the Dakotas and
maybe Jeep Liberty, is the junk rotor issue been
taken care of?

3) Has the ball joint issue been taken care of in
the 05's yet?

4) DC still having problems with their trannys?
You 04 owners should be able to answer that one.

I'm not about to buy another DC truck of any
model again only to start all over again and fix
DC's problems myself. I have a 02 Dak 4X4 4.7
and I've gone through all the issues. Warped
rotors after 12k. Replaced myself. Ball joints.
Left side upper has some play at 24k. Tranny acts
up every once in a while. Changed filters and
fluid. It helped some. I'll NEVER buy another
automatic again from DC. Computer controlled
shifting SUCKS!

So guys, what's your input?

I'm not quite sure of the other questions, but other than a slightly rough idle, I haven't had any problems with mine @ 5,000 miles. A little bit of a jumpy idle don't bother me anyway. I don't think that I've heard of any transmission problems around here yet, but we'll just have to wait and see if the problems been fixed.

I currently own a 2004 Dakota, 3.7 liter, V6 - and I have the "rough idle" or "engine miss" that you have mentioned. The vehicle currently has 6,000 + miles on it and as far as I know has no other issues with the rotors, ball joints, etc. I do try and keep up on the preventative maintenance items - so I have never [knock wood] had a tranny/brake pads/rotors problem with the 3 Dodge vehicles I have owned over the years. As a side note - I have had my scan tool hooked up a number of times, due to the engine "missing", and not one code has been logged, yet.

Unca Bob, I guess DC has to rewrite the computers
software to fix the missing problem. One guy has
been waiting for months. From what he said, DC
has not even begun to rewrite it yet. This is why
some are checking into their states Lemon Law.

Well DC can just keep their 3.7's. I'll wait till
I buy anything now.

TimberlineSXT, I'd scream at the dealership about
your problem if I owned your truck. You paid hard
earned money for it, why put up with it if it's
not 100%?

Thanks guys for your input...

i have the 3.7 mated to an auto. i have the engine surging/rough idle problem as well. The engine does not do it in the Liberty due to wieght and gear ratios as well as the torque converter only locking up when the engine is out of the stage where it stutters. The engine other than those major flaws has great torque even down low and gets decent MPG. i am up to a consistent 17-18 and recently got 22 on a road trip.

I have 6K miles on my '04 Dakota SLT. It idled rough from day one. The dealer "Flashed" the Rom at the first oil change, But it did nothing. When I bought my Dak I traded in a '87 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 with 212K miles that idled like a dream! They only gave me $500.00 for the Jeep. Oh well, Live and learn. If anyone has any cures for this rough idle, pass them along!

I have an 04' dodge dakota with a 3.7L V6. it's having starter issues. everytime I crank the Key, the engine clicks and there is little to no movement in the flywheel. the engine itself has 80k miles on it and it has a brand new block installed from the dealer. I replaced the starter and have encountered the same issue. I'm thinking its the ignition switch, but some people are saying that my battery has an amperage issue. I've been searching for answers, anything helps! thanks

I have 2008 Dodge Dakota with 3.7 that falls flat
on it's face at 1500-1800 rpms,so obviously this
problem was never fixed.Has anyone found a
solution? I love the truck and it runs great 60mph
and up,but it's amazing how much city driving
falls in this rpm range and the engine just quits
pulling.Ive put in cold air and stainless dual
exhaust both were great improving 2000 rpms and up
but nothing mat lower end.

2004 Dakota 3.7L V6 with 200k miles on it. Sharp noise like the belt snapped under the hood at 25 mph, but power steering, etc was fine. Truck immediately began bucking and snorting and the "all-knowing" Check Engine Soon light illuminated. Mech said there was zero compression on the #2 cyl, so I pulled the valve cover. Found the #2 rocker arm laying at the bottom of the cover but undamaged. #2 Push rod had broken the head cover rod column and was bent and stuck solid. I'm weighing my options on either an engine change or just a rebuilt cylinder head or two.

I changed my oil and filter, it was really
black. Just got the truck and haven't
driven it 100 miles. There's no power.
Taking off the cat and see if that helps.
Has power steering fluid everywhere.
Should I start somewhere else? It has a
glasspak, or Flo master on it just seems
clogged
