I don't know much about 4x4, but why would you
need limited slip with 4x4?
Maybe someone can explain how 4x4 really works
these days.

Message: Well Jesso...
Unless you purchase a vehicle that is full-time 4wd then you will only be in 4wd when you make the switch, when you need extra traction or need to get out of a tough spot. The rest of the time you are going to be in 2wd only, with just the rear wheels doing the work. The benefit of the LSD during those conditions (which is most of the time unless you use the truck for work, or live in Antarctica) is that you won't be spinning just one tire if you lose traction. An open differential will cause only one tire to spin. If one tire loses traction then the power is sent to that wheel and then you have very little or no power going to the wheel that does have traction. So the LSD eliminates this by having both wheels turn. Hope that helps.

Message: This just made me think... when I purchased my 4x4 it had LSD as an option. I got it, of course, but I'd always wondered if I could have ordered a 4x with an open diff?

My four-wheeler is like that...has 4 wheel drive but the front wheels are open diff. At least the rear has a solid axle. Still sucks getting stuck only cuz you have zero traction on both wheels.

Message: yup, you're almost correct in your statement that
it's a 4X3.. If you don't have the LSD option,
when you switch to "4X4", your really in 4X2.
Think about it.. Your stuck, one back wheel spins
and one front wheel spins to get you free.
When you're in normal 2 wheel drive, you're really
in 4X1..
And you guys that *think* both rear wheels will
spin when your stuck with LSD, I think you better
look for yourself. If one rear wheel begins to
spin, the power will transfer to the other rear
wheel. Look for yourself! Get on some wet leaves
with just one rear wheel and have a friend mash on
the gas. Both rear wheels will not spin.
LSD is a great option BUT don't get it confused
with the older "posi" traction rear ends. Those
rear end WILL get you in a ton of trouble on wet
or snow covered roads!
Been there, done that, tow truck pulled me out of
the ditch.
