Subject: 2005 Payload Less?!
IP: Logged

Message:
My stock '01 ClubCab w/ 4.7 4x4 3.92 AT factory 2.65x70x16 tires has published payload of 1800#. Looking forward to same 2005 w/ new 4.7HO, but published payload is 260# less (1560). Anybody know why? Regularly haul close to a ton on rough roads & trails here out West, and my '01 squats only an inch or so and handles great. What's up w/ lighter max P/L for '05? LUV MY TRUCK -- not a single problem @ 50K mi., lots of them tough! :-)

According to the Dodge website, the 04 version of your truck has a 1500lb max payload, I don't know, but I doubt they changed that much from 01 to 04. The 05 Dakota has a 1560lb max payload, as your said, which is a 60lb increase from the published 04 model. Maybe you should double check the place you got your stats from.

Don't know about '04, but my owner's manual says "2000," which I confirmed w/ dealer when I bought it new, and which I've confirmed by how well it handles about 1500-1800# in real driving -- including only settling about 1 to 2" and being stable. Maybe they heavied up the truck, w/ resulting less P/L, since then, but, in any case, only 1560 is disappointing. Not that everybody should max out any vehicle if they don't know what they're doing, but it is substantially less.

Just to close the loop on 2005 P/L downgrade, talked to Dodge, and they say it's because of heavier 2005 curb wt. So, they must have fattened it up w/o beefing up suspension. :-( May look for a new 2004 somewhere to get new miles (& warranty) while waiting for them to see the error in their ways in the next few years. So much for "midsize!"

Wasn't the 2000 lb payload an option that came with heavier springs and larger rear brakes ? I believe it was in '00 at least.
