Subject: Foam Filters?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys, new to the forums and new to Dakotas as well. I have read here a few times about how switching from a paper filter to a foam filter (K&N/AMSOil, etc) will improve performance, mileage and all kinds of good things. I was wondering just how good these really are. If you have to treat them with oil in order to catch dirt particles doesn't that mean that if you do not put the oil on perfectly you run the risk of getting nasty stuff sucked into your intake as well as maybe getting some of the filter oil particles sucked in as well?

Do they really work as advertised or are the paper filters that were designed for the engine really that bad?

Great forums and thanks for any replies.

Paper air filters are a "Cash Cow" for everyone who either
manufacture, sell or install them.

K&N Filters flow a lot of air as well as dirt (that is why they offer
a dust pre-filter).

A dual stage oiled foam air filter is the way to go! It will not last
as many miles or years as a wetted gauze filter (K&N) but it is
cheaper to service and usually cost half as much to use in the
long run.

Amsoil does NOT offer a paper air filter. We offer Amsoil TS (Two-Stage) Air Filter with Oil-Wetted Foam --- NOT to be confused with the NEW Amsoil FlowzAir currently coming to market.

Paper vs. Foam Filters

Foam is thicker (than paper) and allows for more area for the dirt to get caught --- still allowing for good airflow.are "full-depth" filters that trap and hold much more dirt than do conventional "surface-type" filters. The polyurethane foam used in AMSOIL Air Filters is much thicker than the thin layer of paper used in conventional filters. The foam’s thickness allows for more filtering area and more capacity to trap dirt over a longer period of time.

Amsoil TS oil-wetted foam air filters keep oils and engines cleaner for longer periods with the most effective air filtration available today.

AMSOIL air filters provide superior performance in all three critical areas of filtration:

efficiency (dirt-stopping)
capacity (dirt-holding)
resistance (air flow)

AMSOIL air filters are uniquely designed to hold wear-causing dirt while allowing clean air into the engine for better performance, better fuel economy, lower exhaust emissions and longer engine life.

Also, AMSOIL air filters are washable and reusable for thousands of miles of trouble-free service.

The Amsoil TS Air Filter for passenger vehicles, features two layers of oil-wetted polyurethane foam, which provides a network of interlocking cells that trap particles yet allow a constant flow of clean intake air for outstanding engine protection and performance.

AMSOIL High Tack Foam Filter Oil

... NOW Available in a NEW and Convenient Aerosol Spray

AMSOIL Foam Filter Oil has long provided users of AMSOIL air filters with a high level of air flow and superior particle removal. Now, five years of research, testing and development have yielded a NEW AND IMPROVED Foam Filter Oil formulation.

_____ _____

New AMSOIL High Tack Foam Filter Oil (Product Code: AFO)

A special blend of synthetic polymers that allows maximum air flow and increased particle removing efficiency and capacity.

High Tack Foam Filter Oil

-- stays in place throughout service life
-- resists washout from carburetor fogging
-- will NOT plug foam filter cells
-- new red color helps ensure even oil coverage across the entire filter

AMSOIL High Tack Foam Filter Oil was tested with AMSOIL 2-Stage Foam Filter media under the SAE J726 test methodology, yielding an efficiency rating of 99.5 percent.

High particle removing efficiency is critical in preventing engine wear, keeping equipment running at peak efficiency and improving fuel efficiency.

AMSOIL High Tack Foam Filter Oil is available in its traditional form and a NEW and convenient aerosol spray. Because it offers users quick and convenient application, the new spray formulation is a boon for power sports enthusiasts.

Applying High Tack Foam Filter Oil

For best performance, apply a generous amount of High Tack Foam Filter Oil and work it into the foam media. Squeeze out excess oil, leaving a uniformly oiled filter.

A properly oiled filter will feel oily or tacky to the touch on both the outer and inner surfaces, but should not be dripping oil.

When reinstalling the air filter, apply a thin film of AMSOIL Multi-Purpose Grease on the foam base to insure a leak free seal between the filter and housing.

AmsoilSponsor, I'm an Amsoil Preferred Customer. I currently have the TS-29 on my '04 4.7 Dak. It works great. It's alot better than the paper or gauze that's currently out there. I wanted to know what is the FlowzAir TS-189 and how does it compare to/differ from the TS-29. There are alot of the Ram guys that use the True Flow (Foam Filter). How does the True Flow compare to/differ from the Amsoil Two-Stage?
Thanks.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

AMSOIL oil-wetted foam air filters keep oils and engines cleaner for longer periods with the most effective air filtration available today. AMSOIL air filters provide superior performance in all three critical areas of filtration: efficiency (dirt-stopping), capacity (dirt-holding) and resistance (air flow). AMSOIL air filters are uniquely designed to hold wear-causing dirt while allowing only clean air into the engine for better performance, better fuel economy, lower exhaust emissions and longer engine life. Also, AMSOIL air filters are washable and reusable for thousands of miles of trouble-free service. Tests prove AMSOIL air filters have up to 350 percent greater life expectancy than competitive air filters.

The AMSOIL TS Air Filter, for passenger vehicles, features two layers of oil-wetted polyurethane foam, which provides a network of interlocking cells that trap particles yet allow a constant flow of clean intake air for outstanding engine protection and performance.

The AMSOIL POD Air Filter, for small engines, features an oil-wetted foam filter element and an inner spring that shakes dirt off the filter and harmlessly away from the engine.

Provides Full-Depth Filtration

AMSOIL TS and POD Air Filters are "full-depth" filters that trap and hold much more dirt than do conventional "surface-type" filters. The polyurethane foam used in AMSOIL Air Filters is much thicker than the thin layer of paper used in conventional filters. The foam’s thickness allows for more filtering area and more capacity to trap dirt over a longer period of time.

Improve Air Flow

AMSOIL air filters allow more air into the engine than conventional air filters do and better maintain their air flow over the life of the filter. The intake surface of conventional paper filters quickly becomes obstructed with dirt, which impedes air flow. AMSOIL air filters distribute dirt throughout the foam depth, allowing unobstructed air intake to the engine.

Form Tight Seal

The flexible polyurethane foam of AMSOIL air filters provides a consistent, tight seal between filter and housing. Unlike conventional filters, which often fail to seal properly due to their hard rubber seal, the foam of AMSOIL air filters conforms to irregularities on the bottom and top of the housing, forming a tight seal when the housing is secured. Intake air must go through the filter before reaching the carburetor.

APPLICATION

AMSOIL air filters are available for most car and small engine applications. The AMSOIL POD Air Filter is suited for applications such as motorcycles, rototillers, small garden tractors, lawn mowers or farm implement equipment. The AMSOIL POD Air Filter is adjustable to fit carburetor throats ranging from 1 to 1-7/8 inches. It also has a special adapter for Briggs & Stratton carburetors. Other throat sizes are available.

SERVICE LIFE

The service life of AMSOIL air filters can be extended indefinitely when the following procedures are performed. For normal driving conditions, service AMSOIL Air Filter every 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

1. Remove AMSOIL air filter from air filter housing.

2. Wipe housing free of dirt and debris.

3. Carefully remove polyurethane foam from metal cage of AMSOIL air filter. (Note: foam is not removable on planar-style filters.)

4. Wash polyurethane foam in detergent and water (Alternate method: Wash filter in parts cleaning solution). Rinse in clean water. Allow foam to dry thoroughly.

5. Apply AMSOIL Foam Filter Oil liberally on polyurethane foam. Squeeze foam repeatedly until oil penetrates its entire thickness.

6. AMSOIL Foam Filter Oil is specifically formulated for AMSOIL air filters. It is designed to trap and hold dirt effectively, even in temperature extremes.

7. Blot excess oil from polyurethane foam and reinstall foam on metal cage.

8. Reinstall AMSOIL air filter into air filter housing. Be sure the label is attached to the outside of the filter housing.

To install a deflector (if included with filter):

1. Install at either positive cranking ventilation (PCV) inlet or air inlet to filter housing (where applicable).

2. Install deflector under edge of polyurethane foam only. Do not push deflector under metal cage.

Back to the original question (and away from the sales pitch ).
The K+N filters come with instructions on how to clean and reoil their filters.
They wash out and need to dry before sraying them with oil.(keep your paper filter to use for that few hours if needed)
Let the oil soak in for about 5 min and reapply to dry areas (faded pink, not red ) if needed.
"Don't over oil." is also warned. You would really have to go nuts to put too much on. Just pretend you're spraying PAM into a frying pan and you'll be fine.
RE: improvements.
Better pick-up and throttle response was immediately noticable, although only slightly.
I can't comment on gas milage because I figure if it really mattered to me I wouldn't be driving a Dakota. I'd be driving a Prius.
You will save in the long term on filters.
Check E-Bay to find the used/cheaper from guys who expected more and who've upgraded to K+N FIPK's or Cold Air Intakes.

Two-Stage Air Filters - the Amsoil TS-189 - Amzoil

Hammerdak,

First:

To you, and all the flamers, and those that don't appreciate site sponsors ...

As a site-sponsor, I pay $2,500 per year to have my little banner ad at the top of only a few of the pages, and the right to use the registered name Amsoil Sponsor. This financial assistance to this site affords me the opportunity to post my so called "sales pitch" along with the answers to any questions.

I notice that you are NOT even a paying member! You are here getting a FREE RIDE on the back of the paying site sponsors and paying members ... and then you FLAME ???!!!???

Can you explain this please?

Second:

The original question(s) concerned:

"performance, mileage and all kinds of good things".

... which I answered as follows:

Paper vs. Foam Filters

Foam is thicker (than paper) and allows for more area for the dirt to get caught --- still allowing for good airflow.are "full-depth" filters that trap and hold much more dirt than do conventional "surface-type" filters.

Oil-wetted foam improves performance and fuel efficiency by trapping more dirt and allowing better air flow. Washable and reusable for thousands of trouble-free miles. Reapply Foam Filter Oil after every washing. Product Code: TS

-- More Air Flow

- Full-depth filtration - stops and holds more dirt than conventional paper air filters
- Improves airflow characteristics - up to 50% more air flow than pleated-paper
- Helps extend engine life - effectively eliminates wear-causing airborne contaminants

and then I addressed his concern about:

"doesn't that mean that if you do not put the oil on perfectly you run the risk of getting nasty stuff sucked into your intake as well as maybe getting some of the filter oil particles sucked in as well?"

... with the following response:

High Tack Foam Filter Oil

-- stays in place throughout service life
-- resists washout from carburetor fogging
-- will NOT plug foam filter cells
-- new red color helps ensure even oil coverage across the entire filter

If you read what I post and not just look at the pretty pictures, then you will find the answers within my so called sales pitches. Thank You!

The only "later" question not addressed was:

"There are alot of the Ram guys that use the True Flow (Foam Filter). How does the True Flow compare to/differ from the Amsoil Two-Stage?

"There are alot of the Ram guys that use the True Flow (Foam Filter). How does the True Flow compare to/differ from the Amsoil Two-Stage?"

To this question, I have not yet responded. I am familiar with True Flow and believe it to be awell built and good filter, ... but have no comparison performance #'s ... but I am trying to locate additional information.

Some AMSOIL dealer's a little too sensitive. I don't see that Hammerdak's post is a flame at all.

As for paying sponsors, no one's twisting your arm. For us "freeloaders", the price we pay is to have to scroll through all the damn commercial crap that appears in your posts to find your actual comments. You couldn't find a better way to turn off potential customers than to flood them with this visual diarrhea. All you have to do is post a hyperlink to a site to give us commercial info. Solely and specifically because of your posts, I will never buy your products.

The Amsoil FlowzAir is the replacement line for ALL of the former Amsoil air filter line --- and unfortunately Amsoil has decided to use the same product codes. Amsoil Flowzair filters will eventually be the only filters offered by Amsoil.
__________________________________________________

Amsoil FlowzAir

The foam is (as far as I can figure out and determine with my own eyes) the same as the older models --- manufactured in Superior, Wisconsin by Amaoil. The material used for the "base" is a "NEW" rubber lip (a blue EVA seal which takes the place of the older form fit seal), which is around the filter to help seal the filter in the air box. The edging for some of the odd-shaped cone filters is also a "new" material. Simply put --- it holds in place better with less pressure.

Qualtiy is much better --- as is the fit. I am using one in my Lexus. It makes installing them a snap. My family (father, mother, sister, brothers) are using one in almost every vehicle including a Dodge Truck. We all like them a lot. They are better all around, including the "seat of the pants" test --- oh yes, and don't forget the fancy new packing and cool blue color.[Steven Roark] As to the testing -- standardized and accepted by the industry, but for those who still don't believe anything published by AMSOIL, you will have to make up your own mind. They also come packaged in a better plastic bag so no oil can possible leak out prior to opening.
__________________________________________________

Here is a quote from a satisfied Amsoil FlowzAir Customer:

"I had two of the older versions, one in my 2001 GMC was a real tight fit to get in. Your hands got dirty and its was messy to install. I put in the new TS123 last week and it just dropped in. The fit was perfect. The blue EVA seal takes the place of the form fit seal. It makes installing them a snap. The other went into my 2002 Trans Am and was the same, perfect fit an easy to install. They also come packaged in a better plastic bag so no oil can possible leak out prior to opening."

I do believe that with Amsoil's newly introduced replacement air filters --- Amsoil FlowzAir --- that Amsoil will be offering one of the finest line of air filters in the marketplace.
