Subject: AC - a question IP: Logged
Message: ....as I live up in Canada and the time is here where AC is no longer required as things are cooliing down, I have noticed a small problem with my AC i think. Even when the AC is not on and it is relatively cool outside, say 50-60 degrees, there still seems to be condensation dripping on the ground. Is this a concern or is this normal operating procedure. This is a 99 Dakota SLT 4x4 c/w 3.9 V6. Looking forward to some input please !

Message: When you put your system into defrost mode and fan
running at any speed, the AC will cycle on and
off. Not sure the 99's had electric raditor fan
but if it does, that is cycling on and off in
defrost mode also.
I have for years disabled my air from running in
defrost mode by pulling the LOW FREON connector
near the firewall. The system will now *think*
it's low on freon and will not run. If you have
the electric fan, pull the fuse for that also.
I guess the reason for cycling the AC on and off
in defrost mode is to help dry the air before it
goes to the windshield. I also have heard it's to
keep the seals in the compressor lubed. I can tell
you this, I've never lost a compressor nor have I
really seen my windshield defrost any faster.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Message: Radioman is right, it cycles in an effort to dry the air before defrosting the windshield, and keeps the seals in the compressor from drying out. Can't hurt.
Remember that water from the tailpipe is a good. It's a byproduct of combustion.

Message: Have the same problem with mine. Had the heater core changed by a friend so I charged the a/c myself. Worked good for a little bit but now like you said even on a cool day doesn't cool the air much at all. Checked the freon pressure and it's still right at 44 were it's supposed to be. Also when the air is on I get warm air at my feet. Tinkered alot with it with no luck so let me know what you find with your's.

Message: The drip from the drain is most likely condensate just as the others have stated, but you might want to run about a cup of water into the fresh-air intake at the firewall and note how fast it drains. If you have got water in there from rain or washing, and the drain is sluggish, the water could take a day or so to drain completely. Better to find out now than when the carpet starts to get wet or mold and bio starts to build inside.
