Subject: axle tube leak confusion IP: Logged
Message: Hi -
I have a 99 with the 8.25" rear. I have a leak where the axle tube meets the pumpkin on the driver's side. One shop told me that it was a big job and the tube had to come out and new seal driven in... etc. Then I talked to the shop guy at my local Napa and he told me that there are no seals and that there must be some kind of unknown crack or leak and I should just have a welder put a bead around where the tube meets the pumpkin to stop the leak.
What's the skinny on this?
Thanks :-)
Oh, also I have a groan coming from back there now. It is usually after a highway drive and then my first turn from a stop sign when I get off. I have LTD slip rear and I noticed it after adding some Lucas friction modifier to my rear gear lube. I plan on flushing it out and re-filling. I hope nothing bad happened :(

Message:
You cannot weld the carrier housing to the tube, The housing is
cast iron and the tube is steel.
I have seen this problem only once and we solved it by cleaning
the area well and applying a two part paste called PC-7 (it
hardens like steel).
We applied it like a bead of caulk and then painted the area with
flat black paint.
Note : you must do this while the axle is drained and clean.
(make the area rough with emery cloth or sandpaper)

Message: thanks, Doc. I tried cleaning and roughing it and using a bead of black RTV a few months ago but it didn't work.
Looks like it's time for something stronger. Any idea why it's leaking there? I forgot to mention that I also checked my vent and it is working properly.
TNX!

Message: Cast iron CAN be welded, the trick is to heat it up with a torch first.

It can (and usually does) weaken the cast.

Message: Heat weakens CAST considerably. Makes the metal for brittle. Some Napa stores carry CAST iron welding rods. They will work with any good welder.

Message: It sounds like the rear end pinion seal is leaking. I had my local Dodge dealer do the repair, and rear fluid change, for about $200.
