 Subject: Grease Seepage/Brake Squeel

I was working on the brake pads on my 2 wheel drive 03 quadcab yesterday and noticed grease seeping out of the right front hub. There are no dust caps on the hubs, just a concave washer, nyloc nut and another washer behind that, or so it appeared. Whats to keep water and dirt out of the hub? If grease is seeping out it stands to reason the water and dirt could be entering as well. By the way I was trying to quiet the squeel from my front brake pads by putting CRC disc brake quiet on the back of the pads and synthetic brake grease on the pad/caliper contact points. This worked for about 10 easy stops and the squeel re-appeared. Is there anyway to eliminate this problem without having to install slotted rotors and Better pads? I am planning to upgrade the brakes after the originals are worn out but would just like to get rid of the noise until then. Any thoughts???

You definately should have caps covering your hub nuts to prevent contamination. Are they missing from both sides? If you have not had any work done in this area, this is likely a factory defect. If you have had work done in this area, find a new mechanic.
If you have not had any work done in this area and are under waranty go back to the Dealer and demand that your wheel bearings be removed, examined and repacked or replaced as necessary.
Even if you are not under warranty, this must be done. The dust and grime that enters the unprotected bearing area acts like sandpaper causing premature wear to the bearings and races.
Most likely, your brakes are squealing because the grease that has slung from the open bearing area has "glazed" the pads and rotors. These should be replaced under warranty as well.

You should not have grease seeping out of your hubs like that. The front wheel bearings used on these vehicles are sealed bearings. The Hayes book I have for 2000-2003 Daks states they are all non-servicable hubs. You should definitely take it in to have this checked, mine were leaking out grease after about 40K miles, and had to be replaced. Besides being a sealed bearing(s), they come as a complete assembly (with the hub), if yours are bad you want to get it fixed under warranty (I had to pay $201 a piece for the each assembly!)

Thanks Bill, I am going to have to do some pleading with the dealer because I'm about 200 mi. over warranty mileage. I could tell by looking at it never had dust caps but I didn't know they were completely sealed bearings. I wish it had traditional repackable bearings. I guess they are making everything less self serviceable to squeeze more and more money from the consumers. Oh how I long for the good ol days!!!!
