Subject: Lubricating Steering Linkage... IP: Logged
Message: I just got a reminder notice from my dealer regarding needing the "steering linkage lubricated" now that I have around 15,000 miles on my 00 Dak Sport plus 4X4. Is this something that is included in the oil change during lubrication of the chassis or a totally seperate thing to deal with?? Thanks.

Message: It's supposed to be but they probably haven't. When I bought mine from a friend he had it seviced regularly. I went out to change the oil for the first time and everything was dry.
There are about 10 different zerk fittings in there. Some of them you have to turn the wheel a bit to see.
Those Jiffy Monkeys do it as fast and cheap as possible. Most people aren't going to check up on their work. The car just falls apart and they blame the Manufacturer for a poor quality product and buy a new one from another manufacturer.
It's a cake walk to do and doesn't require any jacking. Just need a grease gun and a piece of cardboard or towel to lay on and you won't get dirty.

Message: Make sure those fittings arent clogged or you will have to replace them like I did. Trying to unscrew a greasy little fitting after you find out it is clogged is a frustrating experience, not to mention the mess!

Message: While I can not praise speedy oil changes for doing good work or following torque spec. They are usauly good about lubing the chasis. Dealers on the other hand are usualy the worst offenders of not doing all of the work they claim to have done.

Message: The DC service manual for the 2000 Dak does not mention ANY zerk fittings on the entire vehicle.
Please specify WHERE on the rack and pinion unit you found these fittings? I thought it was sealed with massive accordian boots on each tie-rod.

Message: Well, thanks guys, I have had all my oil changes done at the dealer since I bought it new and no, they probably don't include that in it or they wouldn't be sending me a notice that says both oil filter change AND lubricate steering linkage. They most likely don't do it when the lubricate the chassis. Just another way to get moeny out of you. I'll have it done next time I go for the oil change. Don't need major repair bills some day for it.

Message: Bruce, mines a 98 but it's not the actual rack. More like the pitman arms and tie rod ends that have the fittings. Also my lower balljoints and a driveshaft slip joint.
