Subject: starting problems IP: Logged
Message: hey, i have a 1996 dakota sport. 3.9 Liter 5 speed and when i start it, it revs up to 2000 rpm instantly, i can just hear the bearings floating. i cant seem to figure out why im having this problem, ive replaced all sensors and just about everything else on this truck from a previous problem i had, any suggestions? runs fine after it warms up.

Message: Coolant temperature sensor would be my first suspect, followed by the MAP sensor, then the air intake temp sensor, and finally the Idle Air Control motor. You need a scan tool to read the values coming to the computer for this one. Just because the sensor is working doesn't mean the wiring to the 'puter is good too. A few ohms extra resistance on a coolant temp sensor will run a richer fuel map, which brings up the RPM's.
In these cases (and I haAAAate to say it); Dealer. Even just for the diagnosis & you fix it yourself, it's worth the money.
