I have a 97 Dakota V6. Every year and a half or so I have to replace the battery. What happens is the truck will not run under 1000 RPM without stalling. Once the battery is replaced, it works fine.
BUT, this time I'm having a problem with the idle, I think. At a stop light in drive, brake on, the truck will die, not all the time, but 50-75% of the time. Battery light will fall close to below normal. Will also do this whether or not air conditioning is running. Also, in park there is no problem with idle. Put new battery in, did not help this problem. Had alternator checked, was considered fine.
What do I check next? Anyone else out there have to replace batteries as much as I have? I've had the truck 4 1/2 years and on my fourth battery.
Help!!!

I have never heard of anyone going through so many batteries unless you have a bad alternator..go somewhere else to get it checked. Sounds like is has a bad diode bridge in it..(allowing discharge of the battery).

I have the same problem with my '96 Dakota, however I am still on my second battery in 4 months, and when it does the stall problem, it does it in park as well. I have also checked my alternator with 2 different companies and they also say it is OK. My truck will not idle at all when it feels like giving me heck! But sometimes it works fine ??? :(

I also have a 96 doing the same thing, but it is my injectors causing the stalling, They are clogging up with a fine rusty grit comming from the fuel rail after changing my fuel pump. No amount of injector cleaner will correct this. They have to be replaced. I just got some FMS units off of ebay for $45. You guys might to look into this as well.

My sister's TAHOE was doing the same thing and also some weird things like wipers will come out at any given time same for driving lights. It turned out to be a small short that it was draining the battery and also messing up with the computer. So I would have it check for that, also for a false ground. I hope your problem gets fix.

Hi All,
3 days ago I went to start my 98 Dakota Club Cab 5.2 V8 5speed. The engine would not turn over right away. THe battery sounded weak. After a few tries the engine started but ran ruff. If I released the clutch, the engine stalled. Eventually I put it in gear and released the clutch and engine ran OK. I was able to drive home with the truck feeling and driving normal at highway speeds. The next morning it ran flawless.
2 days later I tried to start it in the morning and the same problem occured but was able to get to work and back. The next morning the battery did not turn over at all. I jumped it and the engine stalled when I released the clutch or got off the Gas pedal. Eventually I got to work. Does any body know if its just a bad battery or fuel delivery problem or alternator problem. Please forward any info that could help me troubleshoot this problem. Just as a side note I notice a fast repetative clicking noise in the engine compartment that I did not notice before. Also, when the engine stalls you can hear the fuel pump make a noise just like the pump makes when you turn on ignition to prime system before starting.

JodiK, sounds like a bad ground, and possibly a short in your electrical system drinign your battery.
Bawango, replace the battery. The GenIII daks have a tendency to have bad factory batteries. An aftermarket one will work great.
