Message: OK here's the inside scoop.. DCX went to drum brakes at the last minute to save $$ due to the down-turn in the economy. Drum brakes do provide the same output as calipers. The Dakota has an 11.5" L/T drum brake. This is better than the older duo servo drum brake which was on earlier models.
This drum brake also has an automatic adjuster that adjusts out when the linings wear.
There are some shudder issues with this vehicle but it's not the drum brakes fault - its due to a bad axle (the half-shaft is not concentric to the axle tube).

Message: You people pick some weird stuff to argue about. If the truck stops within a reasonable distance, who cares what brakes are in the back? The '05 has decent sized rear drums and I'd bet that it stops just fine, even towing a load. Chrysler isn't that stupid to make it stop in less distance than the previous years, especially since they advertise a larger towing capacity.

Message: The front brakes do most of the brakeing so having rear drums is not such a big deal. Most of the weight in a truck is on the front wheels and thats where the weight transfers under braking. The only real advantage of disks is they shed heat better, but they also require more clamping force. On the rear axel of a truck they are more than enough, they probably have enough power to lock up the rear wheels without abs, so the abs plays more into the stopping distance than the size of the brakes.
Unless you ride the brakes going down a 11000 ft foot pass or drive down the road making repeated panic stops with a trailer the drums are fine for reasonable use.

Message: I have a six month old 2005 Quad Cab 4wd V8 dakota and let me tell you with out question the brakes on my 03 Dakota (4 wheel disc) where infinitely superior. The rear drums on my 05 are noisy, pulsate (not from the abs) and fade. If I had it to do over this one factor would stop me from buying the 05 Dakota.

Message: I also have a 2005 Dakota (Club Cab, 4x4, V8) and my brakes are strong, smooth, and fade free. To me the rear drums are a non-issue.
