Subject: Amsoil - Explain it to me IP: Logged
Message: OK. I've got (2) different vehicles that I'm thinking of switching over to Amsoil oil. The first is a 3.7 (Liberty) w/ 3k miles on it (had 1 oil change @ 1k so far). The second is a 4.7 (Dak) w/ 1.5k on it (1 oil change at 1k also...).
My goal is to change my oil every 9k miles - POSSIBLY 6k if it's driven hard. The liberty is driven about 12k/year and the Dak will be about 18k/year...
What are the differences between all the different types of oil Amsoil has? WHY should I switch to it? Can I run it 9k w/ NO harm to my vehicles? What about the filters? I run Napa Gold (WIX) filters @ the moment.

Better than just giving you a link to another website I will explain everything to you in detail.
However, I just returned from the NorthEast PowerSports Rally at lake George where I was an Event Sponsor. The rally went very well and we signed up 32 new Amsoil Preferred Customers, 3 Snowmobile Club Fundraising Accounts, 1 Garage that will carry Amsoil on the shelf and put it in every car and truck that comes through the door, and 3 new Amsoil Dealers.
I have a lot of paperwork to fill out, and a lot of product to order today, so I will get back to you later this afternoon with the information.

Message: Are there any quick lube chains that carry Amsoil? I tend to hit the closest place which is a Pennzoil location. I've never paid attention to whether they care Amsoil or not.
I'm interested in trying it now because my cousin was talking about it... unsolicited. He used to race and had 6.??:1 gears in his car. He mentioned that he was using another brand of oil and was burning up his gears nearly every run. He switched to Amsoil and said that the gears looked like new after running. Of course he uses it now in all his diesel rigs. :)
I just may be a convert. I'll just have to try it myself now, but having someone you know talk about it always make a difference. :)

Amsoil 25k and 35k Oil Change Intervals
***** READ THIS PLEASE EVERYONE *****
Under a combination of city and highway driving, AMSOIL recommends up to 2 or 3 times longer oil change intervals, it means up to 2 or 3 times the equipment manufacturer's recommendation (If your owners manual states 3k miles , then you can change at 9k, and if your owners manual states 5k then 12-15k changes would be alright based on driving habits ... the harder you drive, the sooner the change).
Proper filtration is also very important. AMSOIL SDF Oil Filters must be changed at least every 6 months regardless of miles driven.
Notice: Modifications to engine will change service intervals.
Notice: More frequent service may be required under severe service operating conditions.
Notice: For drain interval beyond 3x manufacturers recommendations (especially the 25k or 35k oil change) --- Regular oil analysis is recommended for establishing drain intervals.
AMSOIL --- 32 years of manufacturing oil and mountains of data and tests make these clains possible.

Which Amsoil?
Amsoil 100% Synthetic 5w-30 or 10w-30 Motor Oil
Amsoil's SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oils are excellent oils and have shown to be almost the same quality as the Series 2000 (our top of the line synthetic with the nore robust additive package).
IMHO ...
Amsoil 5w-30 or 10w-30 gives you the best bang for $$$, and it is the oil I use.
__________________________________________________
Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30
Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 is Amsoil's most shear stable formulation (SAE vs. Series 2000). The Series 2000 reduces friction (better gas mileage -- fuel savings of approx 2%-3% in comparison to the 10w-30 in short trip driving), protects from heat and wear better, better engine cleanliness than the SAE 5w-30 and SAE 10w-30 due to higher detergency, better cold weather performance --- in any high performance application, --- and will provide the lowest oil consumption in older vehicles that are experiencing oil consumption problems.
(Special note: Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 can be used to in place of 5w-20/5w-30/10w-30 oils. I'd even recommend it in engines that come with 0w-40 or 5w-40 grades.)
__________________________________________________
I use the less pricey of the two. I use the SAE formulation (both 5w-30 and 10w-30) vs. the Series 2000. If you drive your truck "hard" --- you might be happier with your choice of the Series 2000.

Amsoil Extended Drains
I try to be very clear when talking about extended drains. 10,000 mile oil change is absolutely possible. Up to a 25,000 mile interval is possible under certain "ideal" conditions, but please read further for additional information. But the KEY here is that --- The 3,000 mile recommendation is overkill, especially with superior synthetic oils.
Amsoil has been in the oil industry for 32 years. Due to Amsoil's superior synthetic composition and advanced performance additives, AMSOIL performs much longer than do conventional petroleum and other synthetic motor oils. No other major oil manufacturer matches AMSOIL's 25,000-mile or one-year drain interval recommendations (whichever comes FIRST, changing the filter every six months).
However, the 25,000 mile /1 year that is on the back of the bottle is NOT an absolute! One must realize that is for non-severe service (highway miles where you have stable operating conditions) and that the indicated drain interval also has a time period of 1 year maximum as well.

Message:
mcarthey,
You will NOT find Amsoil SAE Synthetic Motor Oils or our Amsoil Series 2000 Synthetic Motor Oils at the "Quickie Lubes". What you will find at many Quickie Lubes is Amsoil XL-7500.
Many "Quickie-Lubes" are now carrying Amsoil XL-7500 Motor Oil (API and rated for changes at 7500 miles or six months).
AMSOIL XL-7500 Synthetic Motor Oils are specially formulated to provide outstanding wear protection, power, fuel economy and performance for 7,500 miles or six months of service. With AMSOIL XL-7500 Synthetic Motor Oils, motorists driving 15,000 miles a year need only change their oil twice annually. AMSOIL XL-7500 Synthetic Motor Oils offer a high degree of convenience and savings through their ability to perform and protect engines for extended periods.

I do not recommend this oil. For a few pennies more you can purchase Amsoil's SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oils as listed above.
IMHO ...
Amsoil 5w-30 or 10w-30 = the best bang for the $$$, and it is the oil I use.

AMSOIL INC. has been the leader in synthetic motor oil formulation since its introduction of the world's first API rated synthetic motor oil in 1972. By specializing exclusively in the synthetic lubricant technology, AMSOIL is able to optimize the most advanced chemistries available.
The "Genuine Synthetic PAO Formulated" designation displayed on AMSOIL packaging indicates that the oils are formulated with Polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic base stocks. This chemistry is the industry's premier base stock technology. Unlike conventional mineral-based chemistries, AMSOIL PAO base stocks contain fullysaturated, hydrogenated molecules and are free of wax and other impurities. Combined with an exact balance of premium additives, it delivers superior hot and cold temperature performance, resists oxidation and acid formation and provides long-term wear protection.
AMSOIL "General Synthetic PAO Formulated" oils have shattered the parameters of the most rigorous industry testing and set the standard for all other motor oils.

Message:
API Comparative Motor Oil Testing
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil (ATM) and 10 competing conventional and synthetic 10W-30 motor oils were subjected to a series of API motor oil tests. The competing oils included petroleum-based Castro GTX Drive Hard, Mobil Drive Clean, Pennzoil with Purebase, Quaker State Peak Performance and Valvoline, as well as synthetic-based Valvoline Synpower, Quaker State, Castrol Syntec, Pennzoil and Mobil SuperSyn Multi-Vehicle.
Seven API tests were run on the motor oils. The Thin-Film Oxygen Uptake Test (TFOUT) measures the oxidation stability of engine oils. The High Temperature/High Shear Test (HTHS) measures a lubricant's viscosity under severe operating conditions. The NOACK Volatility Test measures the evaporation loss of oils in high temperature service. Pour Point indicates the lowest temperature at which a fluid will flow. Total Base Number (TBN) is the measurement of a lubricant's reserve alkalinity for combating acids. The Cold Cranking Simulator Test (CCS) measures a lubricant's viscosity at low temperatures and high shear rates. The Four-Ball Wear Test measures a lubricant's wear protection properties. The impressive test results show AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil outperformed the competitors in each test.
Thin-Film Oxygen Uptake (ASTMD-4742)
The Thin-Film Oxygen Uptake Test evaluates the oxidation stability of lubricating oils. A mixture of the test oil and chemistries found in gasoline engine operation (oxidized/nitrated fuel, soluble metals and distilled water) are placed in a test vessel, which is pressurized with oxygen and placed in a heated bath. Anti-oxidant breakdown is evident when the oxygen pressure in the vessel rapidly decreases. At this point, the induction time (break point) of the oil is recorded. As shown in the graph, AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil had the highest induction time of all the tested oils. In fact, it didn't reach its break point in over 500 minutes of testing.
The superior oxidation stability of AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil allows it to effectively resist the formation of engine deposits and sludge, keeping engines running clean and efficient and extending oil life. It also resists thickening, maintaining its superior wear protection and lubricating properties and maximizing fuel efficiency.
High Temperature/High Shear (ASTM D-4683)
The High Temperature/High Shear Test measures a lubricant's viscosity under severe hightemperature and shear conditions that resemble highly-loaded journal bearings in fired internal combustion engines. In order to prevent bearing wear, it is important for a lubricant to maintain its protective viscosity under severe operating conditions. The minimum High Temperature/High Shear viscosity for a 30 weight oil is 2.9 cP. As shown in the graph, AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil surpasses this minimum standard and displayed the highest High Temperature/High Shear viscosity in the group.
The superior viscosity retention of AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil in the face of severe temperature and shear conditions allows it to provide continuous, unsurpassed protection for engine bearings, extending equipment life and preventing wear.
NOACK Volatility (ASTM D-5800)
The NOACK Volatility Test determines the evaporation loss of lubricants in high temperature service. The more motor oils vaporize, the thicker and heavier they become, contributing to poor circulation, reduced fuel economy and increased oil consumption, wear and emissions. A maximum of 15 percent evaporation loss is allowable to meet API SL and ILSAC GF-3 specifications. As shown in the graph, AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil outperformed its nearest competitor by over 30 percent.
The extremely low volatility of AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil allows it to maintain its superior protective and performance qualities throughout extended drain intervals, even when faced with severe operating temperatures. In addition, oil consumption and emissions are minimized and fuel efficiency is maximized.
Pour Point (ASTM D-97)
The Pour Point Test determines the lowest temperature at which a lubricant will flow when cooled under prescribed conditions. The lower a lubricant's pour point, the better protection it provides in low temperature service. As shown in the graph, AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil has the lowest pour point of the tested oils.
The low pour point of AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil allows it to maintain its fluidity in extremely low temperatures, reducing drag on moving vehicle parts, providing critical engine components with quick, essential lubrication and easing startup in cold temperatures. Wear is greatly reduced and equipment life is extended.
Total Base Number (ASTM D-2896)
Total Base Number (TBN) is the measurement of a lubricant's reserve alkalinity, which aids in the control of acids formed during the combustion process. The higher a motor oil's TBN, the more effective it is in suspending wear-causing contaminants and reducing the corrosive effects of acids over an extended period of time. As shown in the graph, AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil has the highest TBN of the tested oils.
The high TBN of AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil allows it to effectively combat wear-causing contaminants and acids, providing superior protection and performance over extended drain intervals.
Cold Crank Simulator (ASTM D-5293)
The Cold Crank Simulator Test determines the apparent viscosity of lubricants at low temperatures and high shear rates. Viscosity of lubricants under these conditions is directly related to engine cranking and startability. The lower a lubricant's cold crank viscosity, the easier an engine will turn over in cold temperatures. 10W motor oils are tested at -25°C and must have a viscosity below 7000 cP to pass. As shown in the graph, AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil is well below the maximum requirement, while many of the competing oils barely pass.
The low cold crank viscosity of AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil reduces drag on moving engine parts and allows engines to achieve critical cranking speed in extremely frigid temperatures. Engines turn over quickly and dependably in the coldest winter temperatures.
Four Ball Wear (ASTM D-4172)
The Four Ball Wear Test determines the wear protection properties of a lubricant. Three metal balls are clamped together and covered with the test lubricant, while a rotating fourth ball is pressed against them in sliding contact. This contact typically produces a wear scar, which is measured and recorded. The smaller the average wear scar, the better the wear protection provided by the lubricant. As shown in the graph, AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil produced the smallest wear scar of the tested lubricants.
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil provides unsurpassed protection against engine wear. Equipment life is extended, and repairs, downtime and expenses are reduced.
REPEAT
AMSOIL INC.has been the leader in synthetic motor oil formulationsince its introduction of the world's first API rated synthetic motor oil in 1972. By specializing exclusively in the synthetic lubricant technology, AMSOIL is able to optimize the most advanced chemistries available. Go to the used oil analysis section and see how lots of different oils perform in the real world. I know posting a link is kind of a cop-out but it is a good site to learn all you need to know about oil. If you have ADD don`t bother, you`ll need to spend some time to soak in whats going on.
