i have a 94' Dakota club cab with the 5.2L v8, ive been in many arguments about its townig cabilities. ive recently revived a 24.5 cabin cruiser weighing roughly 4000 to 5000 lbs. i need to know weather or not the truck can stop something of that size. i know the 5.2 can pull it but when i take it out on the road the first time i dont want to find out the hard way when i rear end somebody. any info would be greatly appriciated

If your Dak is 2 wheel drive it should be capable of towing up to 7000 lbs if properly equipped with a towing package.

According to drawtite, you can get a III-IV hitch.

w/o distributing system
5,000 lb trailer 500 lb tongue

w/ distributing system
7,500 lb trailer 750 lb tongue

check your owners manual for GVWR, my '95 CC V6 has GVWR of about 8200 lbs as i recall. I went to TSC and picked up a curt class III hitch, they installed it for $25. I've pulled a 12 foot
uhaul trailer, sucky gas milage ~10-12 mpg.

make sure the trailer has a working braking mechanism!!

I answered another post about towing earlier, i think the tongue weight on avaerage is about 15-20% of the trailer weight.

Make sure to keep the tongue weight at that 15-20% range. Too little on the tongue and it will cause the trailer to fishtail dangerously, too much and you will push the back end down too much and thus raise the front end up also dangerous.

since no one answered your question, I'll chime in. Any trailer of that size must have its own brakes, so I would not worry.

My '04 4.7L 4x4 w/3.92's pulls my 21 ft cuddy (4,500 lbs + trailer) just fine... stops fine too with no working trailer brakes... Of course I'm not taking it down steep grades ;)

so you are stopping 9000lbs on stock Dakota brakes and bragging? That's pretty stupid and irresponsible.

Hurl,

Please tell me you aren't going to tow that boat much. First panic stop and you are going to have trouble without trailer brakes. And that raises a question: what kind of dildo would sell a trailer for a boat that big...without surge brakes at least??

Makes you wonder, doesn't it ? My 19' cuddy cabin will push my truck badly on a steep grade; even with surge brakes I have to downshift to maintain control on one hill. Surge brakes don't work as well as electric brakes on a long downhill run.

after buying the Cummins equipped Ram, who the heck can afford a boat anymore? Besides, who the heck needs a deisel ram for a litte boat? People used to haul 30' TT's on the bumpers of Caddys, hehe.
