Message: I didn't think it was a 'black box' like they have in airplanes but that the computer than runs the whole vehicle also stores top speeds, etc. So you can't 'pull the black box' without trashing the vehicle.
It's not as bad as it was when I visited Brazil. There the cars/trucks were equipped with a paper recorder that tracked speed. So all the police had to do was check the graph to see if you were speeding. The vehicle I was in (not driving) did not have the graph paper and we all almost were arrested and hauled off to jail. It was scary.
Compared to that, we have it easy here.

Message: Sometimes the "black box" idea is good. Back in college the prof of a networking class had her husband come in and give a lecture on networking. He worked for allison or cummins, i can't remember which one. But they were working on a prototype for delivery vehicles. If the vehicle broke down, engine info would be sent via wiress to HQ and the mechanic would get a printout. The mechanic would have a good idea of what was wrong before being dispatched.
There are advantages and disadvantages. I'm all for it as long as that info goes no father than myself unless I give permission. I would like a readout of all engine issues. Save me time and trouble in repairing it.

Message: Hey, Doug, When have you been to Brasil and where?
Man, I just wanna say sorry for any inconvenience that happend to you, that time you were visiting my country. Did someone hit you or anything like that???
Sometimes you were in the wrong place, wrong time...
Brasil is just a poor country that is trying to get better, but changing from a non balanced, Fu*in crazy Social/Political/Economical Scenario to a more comfortable one is slow here in South America...
I can assegurate to you that Brasil is the most safe country in South America to be at.
I made sh*t in my pants when I visited Paraguai and Peru a few years ago... You have no clue how miserable those guys are..
Anyways,
Was there a Cab or a rent vehicle you were in that time?
Most of our vehicles don´t use that "stinkin paper" system you are talking about..
I just saw that POS system in taxis...
I´m suspect to say I love USA and americans could develop an awesome system like you said..
But I had no Idea about those black boxes being used in Corvettes and other cars, kind of disagree with that hide stuff thing..

Message: This is a bit off topic, but I was in Brasilia for a research project and it was a ‘rental’ vehicle. We hired a driver to take us around (so we wouldn’t do something stupid in a traffic circle). In the country, between Brasilia and some town famous for its gems (I forget the name), we were stopped by the police. When they checked the little device, it had no paper. I have no idea why. The driver seemed surprised. The bottom line is we all had to get out of the vehicle and the driver was almost arrested. When the police found out we were all US nationals (except the driver), he ‘talked’ to us. My Portuguese is pathetic, so I had no idea what he was saying, other than he was not happy with us. After a good bit of talk between the driver and the police officer, he let us go with a big fine.
What do I remember of Brazil? The contrast between the poor and rich, the unrealized potential of the country (resources and people, with the right influx of money and good government, they could be a serious world economic power), the cars smelling of alcohol (I think the cars ran almost pure alcohol), very friendly people (seemed to find my pathetic attempt at their language charming), wonderful (and cheap) food, and women the likes of I have NEVER seen before (or after). To say they were drop dead gorgeous would be the understatement of the year. There is no way to describe them, you have to see them to believe them. Oh yea, and they didn’t wear much. I had a good time. I never met an unfriendly person (other than the police officer).

Message: I wanted to add that I never felt 'unsafe' while I was there. The police gave me the creeps since they didn't have uniforms like our police. I was not sure how to treat them (being a US national in Brazil, a country that is not exactly known for its love of the USA). Everyone else was fine. I liked it there, but I was glad to return to the US (where I know how to act).

Message: Here in Canada, it's your car & you can do whatever you want with it. In some areas (mine included), it must pass an emissions test every two years, or when you sell it. The emissions test consists of a visual inspection to ensure all the emissions control components are physically there, and a dyno run to check tailpipe emissions.
There are about 1000 conditions that can cause a code to be stored. Clearing them does not help anybody, especially people like myself who are paid to diagnose problems. If your vehicle throws a code it's telling you somethings wrong, so look into it!

Message:
Doug,
I´m very glad you were safe while were in Brasil.
I think the poor police was just trying to get some money from the driver or from you. Unfortunately, our police salary´s, uniforms etc.. is not that good as it should be if you understand what I´m saying..(back to that social/economical/political thing)
Just to let you know and "I only tell the truth on this website" It´s completely wrong, but "kind of common" in Brasil and I believe in all South American Coutries to pay a certain amount of money for the police let you go if you did something stupid on traffic...
I repeat that is completely wrong to me and I will never make that kind of stuff like that in my life and go against the law.
I know, it´s sad about the unrealized potential of my country, It will take time for changing that man...
Talking about the cars, yeah, we have almost pure alcoohol as a fuel to fill the tank up anytime. It can be found it in any gas station here. A little bit of water in that formula as well.
We also have a newer/powerful/less sucetible for pollution(much less sulphur in the formula) 95 octane gasoline in some gas stations too. It´s gonna be able to the rest of the world to use just in 2005. It´s used on the F-1 BMW-WIlliams team.
If you one day decide about coming to São Paulo I can show you what a supercharged R/T is able to do with just 9psi using alcoohol as a fuel, heh..
Hehe, you liked the brazilian women didn´t you?? I can send you some pics later, okay? Guess you are gonna love them, hahahha...(only Dodge fans)
I like those american women beauties. In my opinion they are the most gorgeous in the earth.... What I saw in Florida was unreal and unfortunately my english was stinkin so bad that time, shout.... HotGrils are in everywhere in US. man!!

I forgot to mention my #2 favorite thing in Brazil: Antartica Guarana. I am addicted to that stuff. I have to drive to Atlanta every few months to get a new supply...

Message: Antartica Guarana Soda, hehee..
Well we have three different companies that produce different guaranas for our taste.
-Antártica Guaraná
-Doly Guaraná
-Taí Guaraná (from Coke)
All of them is produced in Amazônia territory.
I can get you some newer Guaranás if you get some Doctor Peppers for me.
