Message: I was wondering...
Has anyone installed a CB radio in their Dakota? If so, how did it come out? Where did you install it? How hard was it to wire in? What kind of CB radio was it? Where did you put the antenna?
Thanks,

Message: I've done EXTENSIVE research into CB radio installations, and it's not as easy as it seems. While popping one in for short range communication (less than 1 mile) isn't hard, getting good range out of a CB requires thoughtful antenna installation. The radio itself is easy to install, just a power and ground wire direct to the battery. You must use seperate power and ground supply wires to reduce the chance of electrical noise.
From what I've read, the best setup is one of those thin 'whip' antennas in the center of the roof. Next best is the trucker-style ones mounted as high as possible, usually on the side of the hood, or the rear of the bed. You also need to have the antenna tuned once it's in the vehicle. You shouldn't mount it on the rear bumper near the tailgate, or at the front of the bed near the cab. This is because outgoing signals will bounce off the cab and hit the antanne, causing stress to the radio. There is a TON of info about mounting the antennas, but rule of thumb is higher is better.
As for radios, nearly all have the same output and sensitivity to incoming signals, so anything over $100 means you're buying bells & whistles.
Some really like having all the controls on the handset. They're premium priced, but nice not to have to mount the box on the dash.
Good luck! And DO RESEARCH!
