Can anyone who has put in a disc changer with a factory head unit tell me how difficult it was, any problems to look out for and where they mounted it? Thanks in advance for all replies.

Depends on what kind you buy. I have one in my '01. It's the kind that plugs in through the antenna jack, so install was pretty darn simple. Sound quality is not quite as good as with the other type. But it's the only kind that matches the factory head unit, so it's a whole lot cheaper - life is full of comprimises. The box is bolted to the floor directly behind the center console.

I put a Kenwood (KDC-C565-FM) 6 disc CD changer under the back seat of my QC.
It uses a FM radio signal to transmit to the factory AM/FM/cassette .
Turn on the supplied head unit(screwed to the change holder by the cupholders in my case ) , tune the radio to 88.6 and BINGO.
Sound is great.

Installation involved removing the front seats to run wires under the carpet, and dash removal to wire up the power to the unit and the FM transmitter.

I have an aux input converter made by PIE I think. I use it as a line level aux input for my ipod but you can also order them to directly interface many brands of aftermarket changers. It's rather expensive (I think I paid $70 for mine) but well worth it. The sound quality from my ipod is the same as you'd get from a factory changer and it's controlled by hitting the input button on the factory radio. Just a thought..

You can install a shuttle with a blitz box..it's a small box that plugs into the factory head and then into your cd player. Basically it converts the factory control signals into something the aftermarket changer can understand. It alows you to use the factory head and controls with an aftermarket player. It's a simple plug and play. You can pick up the blitz at any electronics store, I got mine at circut city. The only problem is it will only work with alpine changers I mounted the player behind the drivers seat.

Hammerdak...

Did you think that you lost any sound quality by having the FM modulated changer? I have heard some say that it loses some quality.

The gossip is that there is some loss technically.
Just like they say there is a quality loss if you burn your own copies of a CD.
I'm not telling you that a 5000 watt system is not going to tell the difference .
But I have upgraded the 4 speakers in my truck with Pioneers
and the CD changer sound is better than any FM radio station can give me.No skips in the 2 years I've had it and that covers a few 100 km on dirt roads.

If you want typical car audio quality you'll be happy.I am.
If you are a true audiophile then I can't tell you because everyone has different expectations on their idea of perfection.

What about installing the OEM changer to the factory cassett with changer controls? I have a 97 and my wife is still bugging me for a CD player.

You'll be happy I'm sure 99bludak.
Just a hint if you install it yourself.
The instructions suggest you tap into a power source near the fuse box, under the steering column somewhere.
I found it easier to just tap into the cigarette lighter source.
It's right there by the radio so you dont have to route a wire from one side of your dash to the other.

Otherwise , the install took me and a buddy about 2.5 hours, mostly taking the dash apart(start on the drivers side and work your way across to the passenger side ) and the seats out(to run wires under the carpet) and reinstalling them.

Good Luck
