Anyone have any opinions on good "affordable" (under $150) radar detectors?

So far I am looking at offerings from BEL, Whistler, and Cobra...however I just want to know what others think.

I know that alot of people swear by the Escorts, Valentine 1s, and K40s, but I just don't have the cash for one of those (plus I don't make it a habit of really speeding all that much...) however I do want something that gives me reasonable protection from "lurking" cops... Any suggestions?

Go Bel.. I Have had one for several years. So far no tickets. I think it is a 730i. Once it started going off all the time, I called Bel and they said send it in. 2 weeks later I had a brand new one in the mail!

I have an 870 in the stang, I think I paid 115 for it. go to yahoo and hit shopping and poke around in there. You will get your best prices from them.

The Valentine 1 is without question the BEST of all the Radar detectors. With what speeding tickets cost today and the impact on your auto insurance it makes $ sense to go with the best detector. Been there, know what it is like to not have the $ to spend on desired items.

Take a look at the Motor Trend 2001 radar detector buyer's guide. For the money I kind of liked the Whistler 1770 (built in compass and weather band). Link Below.

Thank you all for your comments... Reading up on those websites gave me alot to think about...

Anyone else who wants to comment... please do, but remember... the target of this exercise is staying "under" $150. If I had $300 to spend on a detector, I would just go out and buy an Escort 8500 which is probably the highest rated right now (even over the Valentine 1... according to Radar Test).

As far as the "cheap" detectors... I am now leaning towards BEL or Whistler... (Cobra and Uniden are definitely out of the running now...).

I guess I have some choices to make huh?

Don't go by the list prices. For example the Whistler 1770 (lists for $180) can be had for $129 at Walmart.

www.radartest.com

they don't seem to rate V1 very highly.

I tend to not want to spend more than what 1 ticket would cost. My Bel's have never let me down.

Well... I finally made my decision.

I know that I stated that $150 was the limit, however based on my research and various opinions gathered, I looked at detectors that I could "get for around $150"...

Since it would seem that BEL and Whistler have that end of the market tied up, I focused on them... and pound for pound BEL won out.

2 models from BEL came to mind, the 890 and the 950... the 890 was rated pretty well and although it has a M.S.R.P. of $229, I found it online for about $149.

However... the 950 is basically a "stripped down" less feature version of the top of the line 980 (same sensitivity range, but less "extra features"). This unit M.S.R.P. is from $279 to $379 (according to several sources... yeah right) however I found a couple for sale in the $187 range.

One place efunctional.com had this unit for $186.95 plus $7.07 shipping. So I went for it...

Yeah, that was outside of my "$150" limit, but it was better than paying over $220 for an even "higher" unit. (they have the 980 for $223.95 which is also an excellent price.)

Either way, I guess I am happy now... I couldn't find a decent price on an Escort or Valentine, so I didn't even bother messin' with those...

Ok then... that's it... I just wanted to give everyone an update.
