Subject: Manual tranny to Auto swap??
IP: Logged

Message:
I searched and searched through the archives and could find a thread regarding this...

I would like to swap out my 5spd. manual for an automatic in my 1995 3.9 Dakota. How much trouble is this procedure? Has anyone here done this swap?

Thanks in advance.

I doubt it's impossible to do, but I doubt it's worth the effort. Is there anything wrong with the manual transmission?

Pretty easy, actually. The tranny for 3.9/5.2/5.9 will bolt right up to your engine. Not sure about driveshaft lengths. You'll need the appropriate tranny crossmember mount, not sure, the manual mount may work. Torque converter (usually a lockup version) for 3.9 or 5.2, but NOT the 5.9. You will need the kickdown that is required for the auto tranny. You'll need a shifter and since you already have that hole in the carpet, slap a B&M Truck Megashifter on the floor. You'll need tranny lines, and either change radiators for an automatic-equipped version, or keep your radiator, and run a hefty auxillary cooler. You will need a computer for an automatic Dakota (or keep your current computer and wire in a toggle switch to activate the overdrive), unless you plan on using a non-overdrive 3-speed automatic. Guess it depends on what you consider a lot of work.
